What means "Adjacent Attacks"?
This tournament is for anyone wanting to play games using the Adjacent Attack Rule (viewtopic.php?f=4&t=51364) If you have never heard of the Adjacent Attacks proposed gameplay, it is very simple:

Newly conquered countries cannot attack (including tapping/slimming a territory) for the duration of the turn they are conquered on.

This means no kill-runs, but a lot of strategy about what your best moves should be and planning for the future.

Resetting neutral territories (missile launch in Arms Race!, Parade Deck in The Citadel, etc) are exempt from this rule, they can be attacked out of when captured.

Since this is not yet coded into the website, this is an HONOR-BASED RULE and means that you should pay attention to your moves carefully to not break the rules.

This tournament is inspired by the 2010 Adjacent Attacks Tournament (viewtopic.php?f=91&t=103112&start=0) run by jakewilliams

Tournament Structure
The minimum number of players for this tournament are 18. The maximum 36. Now that we have reached enough players, the tournament will have three rounds

Round 1:
4 groups of 6 players per group. Each group will play a league of 12 games, one every two weeks during 24 weeks.

Maps will be the choice of the players in the group. When joining each player must choose a map, a spoils settings and a reinforcements setting. Each group will play all 6 maps from its players twice to make 12 games.

After each game, players will be given points acording to this table:
Code: Select all
Winner:   10 points
2nd place: 7 points
3rd place: 5 points
4th place: 3 points
5th place: 2 points
6th place: 1 point

After the 12 games are finished, the top 3 players of each group will move on to the second round.

Veteran players from the 2010 tournament will be seeded in different groups when possible.

Round 2 (Semifinals):
The top 3 players of each group will make into the Round 2. Those 12 players will play 2 leagues of 12 games (one every two weeks), also using the maps chosen by the own players.

After the 12 games are finished, the top 2 players of each group will move on to the third round.

Round 3 (Finals):
The top 2 players of each group will make into the final. Those 6 players will play a shorter league of 6 games (one every two weeks), also using the maps chosen by the own players.

After the 6 games are played, the player with the most points will be declared the winner of the tournament

Solving ties
In case of a tie of two or more players having the same score, the one with most games won will also be declared the winner of the tie. If both have the same number of wins, then the number of 2nd places will decide, then by number od 3rd places, etc. If the tie still exists, a tie breaker 1v1 game will be played.

In we get up tp 36 players, the structure will be expanded to acomodate them, but following the same guidelines described here. The lines has to be drawn somewhere, so no more than 36 players for this tournament

Violation of Adjacent Attacks rule
I will NOT be monitoring these games for rule violations, so players should feel free to PM me if there is a rule violation that needs to be addressed. I have chosen to make all of these games sunny in order to make it easier to track movements. Minor rule violations should be addressed by the players in the game and a consensus should be formed on how to proceed with correcting the error. You can always PM me to give suggestions on fixing the rule violation, and I reserve the right to make a final ruling if the players cannot agree. If the violation affects gameplay (takes away a bonus or otherwise majorly impacts a player), then 1 point will be deducted from the violator's final score. Major rule violations (such as a kill run or serial rule violation) will lead to removal from the tournament and your tournament ranking will be removed. I reserve the right to make the final ruling on all rules violations, regardless of the guidelines listed here.

Freemium policy
Freemiums are welcome, but they have to commit one slot permanently to the tournament once the tournament has been declared oficcially opened. There is no need to reserve the slot in advance.

How to join:
Post in this thread saying:
- Your name
- Your chosen map
- Your spoils choice
- Your reinforcements choice

All games will be sunny, casual, automatic deploy, sequential

IN!

I was thinking of being the joker that picks HIVE, but I don't want to play it either.

Clandemonium (if BETA maps are allowed) or Das Schloss (if BETA maps are not allowed).
Nuclear
Adjacent

As for stalemates, I think we need to be fairly lenient on them. The gist of the rules means that games are going to take longer as the strategy is more long term, and in light of the 4 maps selected so far, they all lend towards a stalemate situation. Perhaps something along the lines of a duration rather than rounds limit? Since we're only actively playing for 12 weeks (3 months), something like one month after the creation of the 12th game sounds fair. Then you could bias it in favour of the most playing (HIVE in the first week, Doodle Earth in the last) so that the more complicated games have more time to finish.

Nothing against BETA maps. So Clandemonium is ok ;)

I think is a good idea to place the more complicated maps at the begining, to allow for more time for the game to finish and avoid using the stalemate rule unless necessary.

The stalemate rule could be something like this:
- IF the 12 weeks have passed AND the result of active games will decide which player(s) pass to the next round
- THEN the player with most territories at the begining of week 13 will be the winner. The rest of player positions will also be decided acording to territories.

Re: 2011 Adjacent Attacks Tournament [8 of minimum 18]

Postby OliverFA on Wed Feb 09, 2011 5:04 am

I have received some concerns about the number of simutaneous games and the frequency of games.

Right now is one game per week with no limit of simultaneous games.

Some potential players would like to see it reduced to less simultaneous games. I have reasons for both choices (Keeping it as it is now or reduce the frequency and/or number of simultaneous games) but am undecided about what to do.

Do you have any preference about this subject?
