USA Map

Postby ManBungalow on Sun Nov 03, 2013 5:48 pm

Okay, this map is like an heirloom of the site now, which is cool.

However, I defy you to work out what's happening (specifically how many blue troops there are) in the Rockies bonus in this screenshot without squinting:

Surprisingly, I'm not suggesting a revamp (though I wouldn't be opposed to one - especially in the way that Asia was revamped). Rather, some different troop circles. Bizarrely, the map already has such troop circles, just not of the appropriate colour.

Thoughts?

troop circle change of colour is definitely in order...do we have original files of this map though?

Seems like it should've been done a long time ago!

complaints have been made for years. if we don't have the original file perhaps a revamp would be best.

To be covering the name of the territory is absurd as well.

with a revamp the map could be made a little larger so that no longer happens

Those are the only issues or there's something else to fix?
If it is just circles and names, it could be more a touch up than a proper revamp.

And for the files I will ask but considering that there weren't for the far east map, probably it is the same for this map. Said that it doesn't look something hard to do.

revamp. touchup. it is all the same to us non-foundry folk.

i would like to see the small map a little larger so there is room for a troop circle and territory name.

Looking at the map image itself, it seems that the original artist put some dark circles at low opacity over the image to make the troop circles. And that, in addition to the simple background texture, might make it possible to 'heal' the image - ie. remove the circles from where they are now. It could be more tedious than finding the original map file, but I think it's plausible.

Update:
I just tried this out on a few regions:

Washington, Oregon, California, Nevada, Arizona, New Mexico, Utah, Wyoming, Colorado.

I'm convinced that this could be done very neatly, and might also be a good opportunity to tidy up the map in a few other subtle ways.
eg. that static noise (from compression?) around certain names (such as Washington, Nebraska and S. Dakota) could be cleared up.

Pedantic, no?

I have nothing against a revamp, just i'm sure many don't want to see this map changed.
But if there's community desire, well we can go with it.

Perhaps we should put up a headline with a vote
A) Revamp the map entirely
B) Change just army circles to better see the numbers and names
C) leave as is

Okay, good fix. In the first post, though, we definitely need to have the before and after of North America and Far East.

Why do a poll for something you know already needs fixing? That seems a waste of time to me.
Just get in and do it, and advise the community in the next newsletter. :)

well we know that army numbers and some text needs changing...why change everything else?
i think the map should be kept as close as possible to the original

Exactly, "think" is the keyword here. We should probably do what the majority of the community would like to see.
