The Discussion on Map Size (Decision on Pg 1 & 11)

  • There will be no change to map size guidelines at present.
  • Following the introduction of 8 player games, we will gauge the need for maps with more territories.
  • If there's a shortage of maps suitable for 8 player games, we will reconsider this whole situation then.

Map size has been an area of discussion for a while now, but has recently flared up again in a number of map development threads. A number of options have been considered, but the decision is for the guidelines to remain unchanged. Maps larger than the recommended size guidelines will officially not be supported.

lackattack wrote:The reason we have guidelines on map sizes is to support resolutions of 1024x768 and up without having to scroll horizontally. Granted small is the default, but only 12% of members that made it past new recruit have their map size set to large.

So please, make sure you read over the [Official] How to Make a Map thread before you start making a map and be sure that it is going to meet and adhere to all the guidelines.

To summarise and make sure everything is crystal clear.

Any map in development must stick to the following map size criteria:

  • You must design two versions of the map:
    • A small (up to 600px wide), and
    • A large (up to 800px wide).
  • Height is flexible, but it is recommended that you do not exceed:
    • 350px on small maps, and
    • 600px on large maps.
  • Height must not be any greater than:
    • 600px on small maps, and
    • 800px on large maps.
Now, Andy and myself have been and will continue to be a little lenient with width. A map should be designed to fit the width of 600px for the small map, and 800px for the large map. However, if the space is really needed we will allow a small map width of 630px, and a large map width of 840px. This really is only to be used for a desperate scenario though, so please don't abuse our kindness and generosity. :D

Lastly, to clear up any confusion about what is needed for a map to progress through the foundry.
  • A map must fit within the size guidelines to be moved from the Map Ideas sub-forum to the main Map Foundry forum.
  • A map must have a small and a large version to progress to Final Forge.
I really hope that is the end of map size discussion and more importantly I hope that has cleared up any confusion there may be about map size or map progression through the foundry.

Sorry about the long post. If there are any questions, Andy or myself will be more than happy to answer them.

=================================
Edit: Since this post was originally made, the size limits have been increased. The current restrictions are not open to negotiation until the user interface is updated:
    1. SMALL MAP: WIDTH up to 630 px; HEIGHT 600 px
    2. LARGE MAP: WIDTH up to 840 px ; HEIGHT 800 px.
    3. SIZE DIFFERENTIAL: A large map must be noticably larger than their small map; 9% larger is required but 33.3% (1/3rd) is recommended.
    4. NOTE: Mapmakers are encouraged to make their large maps smaller than the maximum size limits when possible to eliminate scrolling to attack/read the sidebar info.

Would it be at all possible for me to stretch the height for the maps to 600x600 and 800x800 like the AOM map?

I am planning a really good map, but it will only be possible if it can be stretched to that size...

if the map requires such space then it is permitted.

If i want to create WWII EUROPE(100 terittory map)then small map must be 800X600(maybe 800x500)

Sorry qwert, that's just too wide for a small map. The absolute maximum width for a small map is 630px. Maybe you'll have to drop some territories to fit it in?

What about the Brazil map? I know the small map is larger than the requirement, and some people have complained about the countries being "squished together". Since I am revamping it, I have enlarged it a little so it is easier to see. I guess I can go back to the original size of the Brazil map, but it's still larger than the requirements....what do I do :-k

Have to drop?
WWII EASTERN FRONT HAVE 44 terittory
WWII WESTERN FRONT HAVE 39 terittory
these is 83 terittory without CENTRE EUROPE,if i start droping terittory to fit in then these will not be ultimative WWII EUROPE map.
Also 1 only bigest map in CC(World 2.1) have dimension 710px.
I think that for bigest map(over 70 terittory) rule must be litle change, and alove to small map can have biger dimension(because map with 40 terittory and 100 terittory can not be with same dimension limits)
well these is mine opinion.

KEYOGI titled this topic "The Final Say on Map Size" so I think that means it's time to give up on oversized maps :)

it's not a big deal to me, so sorry for adding to the mix when I realize this is your final say but, since World 2.1 has a width of 700px for its small map, why isn't that the max for the extreme cases?

Does that mean that during the Brazil revamp I have to shrink it to fit the requirements, or am I allowed to keep it the size it is now? Shrinking it would cause too many overlaps and too much confusion I think.

I'm not sure I follow you Fuzzy. Your Brazil revamp is 600x600 for the small as far as I can tell, so that fits within the size guidelines.

I thought it was 600 wide by 350 high was the regulation. I must not understand it, but if it's in regulation that I guess it doesn't matter

Sorry, my mistake. I made an error and had a width instead of a height.

Much better
Would my map make it through if it was 601x601?

I'm a little concernicus that the maximum limits the awesomeness of some maps, like for example the colonization map idea.

Yep. I 100% agree.
I am attempting a sci-fi based map, and i need it to be as big as possible. I will use all the space i can get. basically, i dont need the space for the map specifically, except for maxing out the city area with countries, but i want it to be as big as they will allow to get the visual part of the map really awesome.

It will be awesome.

If you watch the map ideas forum, you may see me post a thread about the map within a few days.
