Foundry Newsletter

Wouldn't it be nice if we had some kind of newsletter that could be "published" (probably in General Discussion) about the latest goings-on in the foundry? It could have a couple uses: it could cultivate interest here, it could inform people about revamps and touch-ups, and probably other things that aren't popping up to me at the moment.
It would probably not come out very often -- but if a few people volunteered to write it (preferably people with some writing skills, with commitment, and who are knowledgeable in the Foundry), I think it could be a great thing for this site.

I love this idea!
It could be done as a mass PM to all CC members, that way it's both more like a newsletter and will be read by those who don't watch the forums at all. Of course, there needs to be some sort of unsubscribe feature...

Tournaments and Maps are intricately linked...more than people realize. I suggest if someone wants to start such a thing up, they look over Gozar's excellent Tournament newsletter---how he structures it, how he has people sign up for it, etc.

The Foundry Newsletter is indeed a big undertaking. I suggest if one person can't handle it, then a small team may be needed.

I also encourage you to talk with Gozar about his Tournament newsletter...a lot can be learned I believe. And perhaps you two can partner up...maybe the same people that enjoy tournaments would enjoy getting a Foundry Newsletter also...possibilities are endless.

Everyone likes to get mail!
I do recommend not going it alone. I have always had support staff to help me out.

I'd be willing to help out. I'm relatively new to the foundry, but it shouldn't be hard to make the newsletter, just time-consuming. But after AP exams, which are over for me on Monday, I'll have nothing but time on my hands.

I tried posting this in a usergroup forum, but I have gotten zero response. I'm willing to start and head up a Foundry Newsletter, but I need committed and capable help for it. Here's an excerpt of the post I already made:
TaCktiX wrote:Here's an outline of what I think we should put in the Newsletter (it has heavy influences from what Coleman used to do):
* Maps in Development
* Map Ideas
* Main Foundry
* Final Forge
* Recently Quenched
* Editorial
* Map Spotlight
* Perspective
To go into detail, the Maps in Development will be a little different. Instead of an exhaustive list of every single map and a summary of each, I suggest limiting it to the following:
- Map Ideas is limited to Advanced Idea stickies and maps that the to-be-determined editing staff of the Newsletter decide have potential (1, 2, or 3, not a large number)
- Main Foundry is limited to either Active Foundry (last post a week, identical to what I do with my Map Stats), or All not abandoned or on vacation
- Final Forge is jack everything stickied
- Recently Quenched is any maps that have been Quenched in the last 2-3 weeks
As you likely can tell, I'm not nailed down on full details for the Maps in Development, input is appreciated.
Editorial will be an article written by a reputable Foundry participant. Topics will be related to mapmaking, but really are up to the discretion of whoever the editing staff decides should write an editorial for the issue.
Map Spotlight, the editing staff will pick a map presently in the Main Foundry and interview the mapmaker. The interview's questions should be relatively standard, and I'd like some help determining what the questions are.
Perspective will be the "reader response" section. First issue I'll put the call out for "if you've got something to say about maps and the Foundry" sorts of responses. Think Editorial but from the other side.
One thing I'm considering with the Maps is to add a Map Health metric. This would be based off of my (soon to be) completed Map Stats project, and will have varying levels from Outstanding (feedback often and useful, updates are consistent, etc.) to Life Support (mapmaker has gone AWOL without declaring Vacation, interest in the map is almost nonexistent, etc.). Once I finish Map Stats I'll have more specifics on this, because I'd like to determine health based first on the numbers, and then on my impression of the topic itself.
-------------------------------------------------
As is my standard (it seems), this is not a small project, but nor is it an impossible one. I need help determining specifics from the outline I've put above, and any suggestions for further sections we could put in the newsletter. I need volunteers to help bring things together (write-ups on maps in development, editorials, proofreading, etc.), and I promise that everyone will get credit for the work they have done. Let's make the new Foundry Newsletter a team effort instead of a stress magnet for one poor soul.

Reading through it, it sounds promising. I think a usergroup may be the way to go. The more people working, the less the work load.
The "Perspectives" sounds like a Newspaper's "Two Cents Worth," where readers submit a few sentences about any topic (we'd obviously limit ours to maps/foundry/cartography/cc related things only).

sounds good. People could even write in to the newsletter!
but there might be a problem.... who should be in charge of the newsletter, and who should help out with it?

I'd also like to state, I'd like to see this newsletter as a standalone Foundry addition...in the sense of it being an "Independent News Source" rather than a "State Run News Source," if that makes any sense.
I believe this undertaking should be entirely user based (as opposed to mods running it, etc)...people should enjoy doing it as Gozar and his team enjoys it.
That's my two bananas.

lol i think i know whatcha mean, like it being understandable to all users, not just "foundry regulars".

Good points there, Andy. Even though I have gotten the 'nod' recently from CC staff, I have no intention now or ever 'pre-screening' the content with the mods. (Keeping withing forum guidelines of course) Not that internet game newsletters are really freedom fighting, but the idea of it being 'community run' is important.
In that same vein, it is important to consider how much content will be submitted and how much will be staff researched. For the Tournament Newsletter, we research all the tournaments taking sign-ups, as I feel this is the greatest benefit the letter provides, but leave any other tournament updates up to individuals to submit for publication. I try to approach it like I own a large billboard, and I let people post messages on it.
You have some good ideas for a layout on the previous page TacTix. I would work from there first. Once you have a layout, you can build around that.

OK so far as i can tell, this will be user based, not mod based.
and i have an idea about how the mods could have something with this to, maybe a special 'mod section' or 'a word from the mods' in the newsletter tho? and like they could pm to the newsletter editor what the section would say. This wouldnt have to be in every edition, but just on occasion.

Bryguy, you're not getting it! Since it is not mod based, mods can still contribute, but they contribute as CC'ers, rather than mods. Thats what makes the most sense to me.
