actually, gimil just cleaned the foundry out last month - there used to be 20+ pages of sewage, now we're down to a single page.
Of course, the filth has just been shunted into Map Ideas, and browsers routinely bump maps that have been dead for months. Ideas that have been floated in the past...
• creation of a Dead Letter Office for any thread that hasn't been worked on in X number of months (con: yet more subforums?)
• tagging maps as they go inactive (con: requires constant supervision and contacting mapmakers; people still bump them)
• locking dead threads down completely (con: what's a 'dead' thread?)

This isn't a terrible idea... "Ideas" used to be just that, now it is where new maps are born. Within Ideas there could be an Ideas subforum, an Incubator for new maps, and a Dead Letter Office for dead threads looking for a new home.
