With the classic map gone I was wondering whether the new map will be decided by a competition?

Yes, make sure you keep an eye on the foundry in the next couple of months!

There will indeed be a competition for a new Classic map...
We're just working out the details of how it will run, and I expect there will be an announcement soon...

I'm just hoping that there'll be a really killer classic map to show my teenage children. Note: I do not currently have children.

Seriously? Setting aside the rudderless torpor of the foundry as a whole, every revamp has been, to one degree or another, a total clusterfuck. Keyogi got mountains of shit over the monochrome Middle East map, gimil's british isles revamp has been in final forge since the Late Jurassic era, and we all know how RJ's brazil revamp has gone. Factor into that the strong feelings about classic, and the length of time it took to even tweak the map, and the attendant outcry over the "white saucers", and the further revamp... it's going to be a long long time.
Which is not to say that the project shouldn't be undertaken. Hell, I know I'll never play the current Lucky Charms version. But I have no expectation that I'll be able to play on a proper classic map within six months, save the possibility of the CC equivalent of divine intervention (simian intervention? tortugal intervention?).

We know that time is a very key element to all this, and we are tossing around some ideas that: Keep quality up, and still involve the Foundry Process to a degree, but also don't drag on forever...

true mate... but if you look at RJ's Brazil: Competition was opened June 26 and it was pretty much completed by early - mid August (if we ignore the veto.)
Edit: June 26th was when discussion of which revamp they decided on Brazil same day. completion began on July 6th.
In reality this means that the map was pretty much ready to be quenched in 1 month.
Personally i would suggest putting up a slightly less grating temp-classic map, with actual landmass so to enable the best possible result in the final replacement.

will it still be copyright if you make the whole map from left to right. Eks Australia where afrika is and asia above there. Just somehow mirrored?

i am pretty sure that hasbro doesn't have a copyright over the world map....(world 2.1 cough)

I've been away from home for the last couple of days, and don;t really know much more than what has been published on-site.
There are potential copyright issues with the Classic map, so sadly it is going to have to change... World 2.1 has very different gameplay...
We're in the process of working out the finer details of the competition, and I think that we all want it to happen sooner rather than later...

No, they can't. Even the layout used in the classic map (a very common cartographic representation) cannot be claimed by them. I'm getting more and more convinced that it must be a combination of the layout of the territories (the lines within continents dividing, for example, Australia into east and west), the names of the terriroties (though that would be a spurious claim) and the gameplay.
CC has changed the actualy gameplay quite a bit over the years, so I think that it pretty safe now - and this is reinforced by the fact that the gameplay remains unchanged on the rest of the CC maps. It may be that the terminology used is considered to be part of the gameplay, and that could explain why (for example) 'attack' has been changed to 'assault' but I think that's also a very, very tenuous claim. I can't see any reason for keeping this new terminology - I would prefer it to be changed back.
But I'm just speculating - and until we hear the reasons the classic map was removed, that's all we can do.

The new Classic map must be developed and made available as fast-tracked preferably within a month else I can't survive this upheaval eventhough I'm a cross-map exponent.

even if someone just put lines and words over jiminski's pic A), it would still look spiffy and like no other map.
also, it woudn't take a lot of time at all to make.

I think the best solution would be to have a small exclusionary group of map makers and site staff create a map that is near final forge status upon first draft. Anything is better than what we have now, and not to mention the only people who know what is in bounds and what isn't is the staff, and they aren't saying.
There are situations were the input of the masses is best, this is not one of them. If there is any attempt to take this down the normal foundry road, it will be disastrous and lengthy. A small group of dedicated individuals can resolve this issue in a week.
Basically, I am saying f*ck the competition. I refused to play on the current piece of shit, as do many people, and I certainly don't want to wait around for contest deadlines, voting, eventual quenching and uploading to play a decent game of Risk, er ConquerClub.
I am quite surprised the site staff seem to be laid back about this. I am sure they care, but do they realize that the classic map was like 90% of their "business". This is really no time for games, it's a time for solution.

The decision to pull the old classic map was taken by the CC admins, and us Foundry volunteers are playing catch up... I've been away from home for the past two days, and came back to this mess... All I know is that the old classic has gone, and that we're doing our best to find a workable solution. I can assure you that we are trying to work towards a quick solution, but we're also trying to get something in place that has been thought out...
