POLL! Re: "Centrescape"

I've added a poll to gauge foundry community support. If enough people are interested, I'll pitch to the mods that we have a competition

Who did the original of this map? (the real original)
Are they still able to be contacted?
Did they do it in Photoshop?
Do they still have the .psd file?
Is it being revamped?
Would they mind if I had a go at re-doing it?
Would the community mind if I had a go at re-doing it?

Keep in mind, the circles, borders, XML, and Gameplay would remain exactly the same. The graphic image is all that would change, and it would change enough for it to be not recognisable as the original. The territory names would change to something etymologically similar, but not the same. It's about time we did something about getting this map back to its graphical glory...

Never played centrescape, but I've heard great things, and intend to play the restored map in the future. I fully support this effort.

Yes, MrConfigT, I know that for a fact

Are they still able to be contacted? I think not. I tried contacting him about a year ago, and no reply

I knew the answer to those 2 :)

and I think we should have another Revamp competition for it :D

Sounds like an idea. I'll get onto the powers that be about it. Also, poll is up. If enough of us are interested, we could have a competition, collaboration, or other such to get this baby back to its former glory :D

I wish there was a "I wouldn't participate, but I am a mapmaker and I think a revamp would be good" option.

Lol wca. This is the problem with polls, they don't take into account all possible sentiments. But the poll is really just there as a basic indication of how much interest there is. This thread is mainly to generate some community interest in getting this baby looking nice again. Just thought it might be nice to be pro-active about it, and show community support and effort towards helping the site in a time of need

Isn't that just the "no" option...

The question is "Would you take part in a revamp comp?"

If you say No - then you are saying "You are a mapmaker but I won't take part" - you are however not voting for "Centrescape is just fine".

We can't put any of the true Middle Earth trappings on it. That setting is thoroughly copyrighted by the Saul Zaentz Company, and licensed to Hasbro for use with their inferior LotR version of Risk.

However, a non-Middle Earth non-copyright-skirting revamp I would participate in.

Yep, this is all true Tack. But the map nexus is not copyrighted (ie the gameplay). It's basically the graphical image and the names of the provinces. I think there's ways around these problems. While it would be nice to play on an authentic Middle Earth map, that simply isn't possible. But what we can do is play to exactly the same gameplay with something that is reminiscent of the genre

Yes I am a map maker. No i will not take part in the revamp. However I will comment if it interests me.

i think this may be a bit premature... while I doubt that we'll ever see the old middle earth map back, I am confident that more information as to how we can/can't proceed with both this and the classic map will become available in the future. When it does, I'd be the first to volunteer to enter a Centrescape revamp competition, but for now I have to vote no.

I think with centerscape, it's a lot more clear, however... the gameplay is 100% original to CC, so if we just come up with some 100% original artwork, then there is absolutely no fathomable problem. Right?

Yeah that's what I'm getting at oaktown. I'm not suggesting just posting a new Middle Earth map, that's a complete waste of time and effort. But with the gameplay and XML that is already in place, there is potential to simply change the graphics to something completely original, change the co-ords in the XML, and everything else is already sorted out. If it's a bit premature, and CC has plans for a competition, then sure I understand. But there does seem to be a fair few mapmakers who are willing to take part in a revamp comp, and if that comps rules stipulate that there is to be no reference to Middle Earth whatsoever, then it should be fine right?

Basically, what I'm getting at is - would CC rather take ownership of the whole thing, or would pro-active community involvement be welcomed, given that it could speed up the process and bring a sense of solidarity?

You're both right: the gameplay of Centrescape wouldn't seem to be an issue, since we still have the play configuration in the Centrescape map. However, you and I don't know what went on exactly, so until the dust settles and we get further information from the folks upstairs, talk of a Centrescape redux might be premature. Lack's last mention of the situation in Announcements - which did not mention the Centrescape map specifically - was this...
lackattack wrote:Any further changes to these maps is also not an option.

Believe me, I think that a Centrescape revamp is an absolutely brilliant idea. I really do hope that it will be able to happen at some point in the not-so-distant future, and again I'd be happy to either run it or participate in it For now, though, I think we need to give both that map and the classic map a bit of breathing room.

I the meantime, we are trying to put together another competition which should launch soon. Keep your ears open.

Well, the gameplay couldn't possibly, conceivably be the issue, because it has never existed anywhere but on CC. And if we make the graphics where it's an oceanic battle (or something just as dissimilar from Middle Earth), then the graphics couldn't possibly be an issue. Classic, we know nothing, simply because it was 100% rip-off, and when we make changes to it it will always be a partial rip-off. But Centerscape can easily be 100% original, meaning that the dust has already settled because there never was any dust.

I am always and have always been in support of any attempt to increase the quality of CC maps. Anything that can be improved, im my opinion, should be.

However at this moment in time I do not feel that any more revamps into the foundry will benefit CC at this moment in time. To many times this year have we had a shake up/rebellion with revamp map images going live. With three other revamps in the foundry atm (which will cause some unrest as well) I just think that new revamps shouldn't be going into the foundry until we are ready for them.

Basically lets get to a point where we can enjoy our maps rather than complain about them :)

Thats just my opinion.

Really? You realize what map we're referring to? This isn't just another revamp, this is making something new to phase out a placeholder.

Was I the only one who got the impression that the shapes thing was just a placeholder?

Despite my desire to see something more attractive, I think that our efforts would be better channeled into something that will not lead to heads banging on walls...

Until lack makes a statement to the contrary, I can safely say that there will not be any changes to the 'placeholder' maps. Yes, the foundry would be able to create something better, but the time for change has passed. :-( It's time to put this behind us and move onwards and upwards :-)
