This got me thinking....

Please include an argument under Game Finder to sort games by number of turns/rounds played, starting date, or somesuch.

Game Finder Date Search

Game Finder Date Search:
The current game finder works very well when looking to join specific types of games or to search for games with a certain player or players, game type, or map. However it is not currently possible to search for games based on the time period in which they were played. Adding a "search by date" function to the game finder would enable this.

Specifics:
  • Please add the ability to search for games based on the date they were initialized.
  • Please add the ability to search for games based on the date they were completed.
This will improve the following aspects of the site:
  • This will make it easier to find groups of games that occurred over a specific time period
  • This will make it easier to keep statistics on games played over time.

This would be useful for one of my tournaments.

So... what happens next with these suggestions?

I like it. Adding an option to search for games started, or ended, on, before, or after the date would be nice as well.

Heh so can I take it, this is not happening?

Patience is a virtue. Have you ever looked at the official to-do list? Some things take longer than 2 years to be implemented. Two weeks is pretty much unheard of.

Sure but this would be very very easy!

Would it? Cool! This would (will?) be an awesome addition. not as awesome as 2-player team games would be, but still...

[GF] Start/end date range for Game Finder results

PostPosted: Wed Dec 18, 2013 11:21 am
by sempaispellcheck
Concise description:
  • An option in the Game Finder menu to search for games that start or end within a specific range of dates

Specifics/Details:
  • Don't think any more detail is needed.

How this will benefit the site and/or other comments:
  • Being able to isolate games started or finished within a certain time period will be very helpful in determining which games count for DoomYoshi's official monthly challenges and any other official challenges the Community Team (formerly the Entertainment Team) wishes to run.

An example, to show how and why this would be helpful
Let's say I create game 14000001, a 12-player game with weird settings (Hive, trench, no forts, no round limit, say), and then later create game 14000050, a bot game, the bot game will start long before the 12-player game, even though it was created much later.[/list]
Now, let's say I run an official challenge that starts after game 14000050 has been created.
Since game 14000050 started before the challenge start date, it won't count.
However, my current method for finding challenge games is by game number, so not only am I not going to count game 14000050, but I'm not going to count any games that came before it - including game 14000001, which is (let's say) still waiting for players when the challenge starts.
Thus, I have missed an eligible game because it was created before an ineligible game.
Now, if I could see all the games that started on or after the challenge start date, I wouldn't even need to bother with the game numbers - I could just ask Game Finder to get me a list of all games that started on or after the challenge start date, and that list would include game 14000001, but not game 14000050.

So to be clear, you're not asking for sort by start date but rather an option that allows you to only return games whose start date matches a certain criterion?

I am asking for sort by start date.

An option that allows you to only return games whose start dates match certain criteria would be nice, but that's not really what I'm asking for.
It would be very easy for me to find such games manually if games were sorted by start date, and that's good enough for me.

I'm asking because it's probably a similar amount of work either way, so unless there's a good reason we should ask for the more general option.

In all honesty, I don't know that there's really much difference between the two, as far as players are concerned - but I could be wrong.

Send a PM to blake letting him know about this thread. He can probably implement it when he has some time.

Done - in fact, that's how this whole thing started - I PMed him to ask if games could be sorted this way, he said no, I asked if it could be made possible, and he told me to start a thread here.
I'll PM him again, though.

I'll just move it to Submitted since I see no downside to this. Could you edit the OP to reflect that I would prefer to have an option to only return games that satisfy a start date within a given date range? And the same with end dates?

However, I'll note that with every option we add to Game Finder, the necessity of cleaning up the interface grows greater.

PMed blake.
He reminded me that there are a lot of submitted suggestions, so this one may have to wait awhile.
I'm hoping he can get to it by New Year's, so we can use it to gather results for Doom's December challenge and the Year in Review Challenge.
We'll see.
