Perhaps you can make some sort of constructive suggestion to improve them then?

These are looking good - I like them!

Here's my thoughts:

Volunteer; I dislike the 'pip', as I'm familiar with this indicating a more senior rank. Could this be a really thin bar?
Private; should still be a bent stripe v
Private first class; v + pip
Corporal; two stripes «
Corporal first class; two stripes + pip
Staff Sergeant; I'm not too keen on the red stripe; perhaps we could have a pip in the same place as the current Sgt 1st Class - and the new Sgt 1st Class as you've got it here.
Sgt 1st Class; the pip needs to be the same colour on the freemium version - as does the star on Sgt Major.
Warrant Officer; this icon looks out of place with the progression.
Major; this could be confused with a 'posh' private - perhaps introduce plain swords here? Or, Warrant Officer could be ¤; Lieutenant ¤¤; Captain ¤¤¤; Major ¤¤¤¤ (current Captain icon)
Lieutenant Colonel; Could be plain swords
Colonel; Swords & star (your Lt. Col.)
Brigadier; I'd make the coloured band slightly thinner, to be the same as Major General , or you could have swords here too??
Lieutenant General; Again, I'd make the coloured band slightly thinner.

Other comments:
We've forgotten about the Conqueror rank!
I thought we could add a scout between a cook and volunteer, with a fleur-de-lis icon?

Okay, a minor issue, but cooks are hardly the bottom rungs of the military any longer .. if they ever really were. (armies move on their stomaches, after all).

Why not change it to something truly on the bottom -- like "apprentice cadet" or some such.?

.. just a thought.

What about a TRULY bottom rung for those with under 200 points (you have to work to get that low). .. .something like "deadbeat", "traitor", "coward" ... even "latrine cleaner" ... etc.

yes but some of us lower ranks are not used to these high ranks and even if we have read the instructions (which i clearly have) its easy to forget whether a start with a flame behind is higher than a start with something else behind... get it?

I like the second set of ranks the best (from on the first page).

I'd say the last ranks look okay, but I don't like the dark shadows. Somehow they seem less shiny and more flat than the first couple sets.

Good idea! That would add a rather humorous touch :P

How about something like this... I've just played around with your image in paint...
Image

I'm still not convinced by the Staff Sgt Icon :? and I'm not too sure about the gold stars on the freemium icons either...

I've added in a Lance Corporal and a Scout at the bottom, and changed the General Icon at the top, to have a conqueror icon too.

There is room for a rank between Colonel/Brigadier if necessary??

I prefer the current style of insignia. They have a 'classic' or 'real' look to them. The majority of the suggested insignia have an almost cartoon look to them.

New insignia could be designed by the introduction of an oak leaf cluster surrounding the existing insignia to denote one half rank up. (In the same way that current field marshall equals current Generals star + oak leaf cluster)

I agree, what's wrong with the style we use now? Other than this thread, I've never heard any complaints about it.

OK, I've been giving this a little bit of thought, and have a controversial and radical re-think of some new ranks.

I've got some pen sketches of possible graphics, so can't post them, but here's a new suggestion:

Junior Ranks
1 Conscientious Objector
500 Scout
600 Volunteer
700 Apprentice Cadet
800 Cadet
900 Senior Cadet

Enlisted Ranks
1000 Private
1100 Private 1st Class
1200 Lance Corporal
1300 Corporal
1400 Corporal 1st Class
1500 Sergeant
1600 Staff Sergeant
1700 Sergeant 1s Class
1800 Master Sergeant
1900 Sergeant Major

Officer Ranks
2000 Warrant Officer 2nd Class
2200 Warrant Officer 1st Class
2400 Chief Warrant Officer
2600 2nd Lieutenant
2800 Lieutenant
3000 Captain
3200 Major
3400 Lieutenant Colonel
3600 Colonel
3800 Lieutenant Commander

Commanding Ranks
4000 Commander
4400 Brigadier
4800 Major General
5200 Lieutenant General
5600 General
6000 Field Marshall

I have some doubt about Commander and Lieutenant Commander, its not going with other ranks.

The biggest change I've suggested is the creation of several 'junior' ranks. About 90% of players have a score below 1600, so this structure will give the majority of players some new targets to achieve. It would be nice to have some more discussion about this - there was plenty a while ago...

Anyway, here is a revised suggestion:

Junior Ranks
1 Conscientious Objector
400 Scout
600 Volunteer
700 Apprentice Cadet
800 Cadet
900 Senior Cadet or Ensign

Enlisted Ranks
1000 Private
1100 Private 1st Class
1200 Lance Corporal
1300 Corporal
1400 Corporal 1st Class
1500 Sergeant
1600 Staff Sergeant or Colour Sergeant
1700 Sergeant 1st Class
1800 Master Sergeant
1900 Sergeant Major

Company/Field Officer Ranks
2000 Warrant Officer 2nd Class
2200 Warrant Officer 1st Class
2400 Chief Warrant Officer
2600 2nd Lieutenant
2800 Lieutenant
3000 Lieutenant Captain
3200 Captain
3400 Captain Major
3600 Major
3800 Lieutenant Colonel
4000 Colonel

General Officer Ranks
4400 Brigadier General
4800 Major General
5200 Lieutenant General
5600 General
6000 Field Marshall
***** Conqueror

i love the idea of adding new ranks.
making the ranks at the end of the list(higher ones) harder to achive.
it would also be cool instead of just the "conquerer" make the top 10 people on the site a class.

you can probbably add: commander, Brigadier, Marshal.

Maybe the Conqueror can be be upgraded to: Prince, King, Emperor Conqueror

you certainly need to differentiate between leftenent (phonetically) colonel and colonel. they are almost indistinguishable!

the rest.. you know i am used to the ranking as they are (again) but i can see a change may be worthwhile in the future and there are some lovely insignias there.

I kinda like the big point gaps between ranks - makes it seem bigger when you switch ranks rather than each being a little jump that means nothing.

Also I think anything below 900 should be a cook. There's no distinguishable difference between 900 points and less among players.

In my mind, the idea was to add some ranks to distinguish between the multitude of players on 'average' ranks; the thought being to add more ranks where the bulk of players are to give them extra incentive/something to strive to achieve.. I have churned through the scoreboard to get a feel for the balance of scores, and have come up with the following suggestion:
Image
You'll notice that I have come up with something that vaguely correlates to the current structure - although instead of bulking out the higher ranks, effectively this has created some 'half-ranks'...
