Suggestion: Show US of A State flags instead of the US of A

 Suggestion Idea:

Show USA State flags instead of the USA flag

 Specifics:

When you are Viewing the profile of a player in the section "Country" you see a country flag generated by the players last IP, in most cases is the US of A Flag, when the player is playing from the United States, the IP to country converter can intead be a IP to US State converter and show the State Flag from that player.

Or, it can show the Country flag then the State Flag.

 Why it is needed:

It will be more specific since most of the players show a United States flag, It might give you something to chat about, it will make it more interesting (at least for me), in my case it will give piece of mind when I see other players gang up against me and know they are playing from a different states and probably not a multi.

 Priority** (1-5):

>> [2] <<

**Note**

1 = Bottom of 'To Do' list
5 = Urgent, implement with next update

Why ? - I couldn't care less if you were from Manchester, Ipswich or Exeter.

I would be willing to upgrade the GeoIP database to get regional info if you could find me a quality collection of state and province flags that I like.

would that work though? I know when I had Earthlink, all IP checkers showed my location as Atlanta, GA, where Earthlink is located, and not where I actually was. I assume it would be the same with aol and those type providers also.

And who really knows the state flags anyway???

I dont think so. My company is nationwide (and bad!) <badda boom!>.
<cough>. OK bad joke.

Anyway, we have the same IP address range (Class B) for the entire company regardless of state. I doubt they divulge their various subnets (and thus states) to any database.

I dont like the idea.

Very few people outside of USA would know what they are - and this sounds like it would confuse the hell out of everyone, just to keep 1 person happy.
That don't add up.

Very few people INSIDE the USA will know what they are either...lol. I just looked up my work IP... Houston, TX! Damn, it's mighty cold and rainy in TX this time of year!

Backglass, you show up as El Paso, TX. Are we neighbors then? lol

On the road for work. It always says something different for me. Last week it said Mexico, a few weeks back Chile.

Another flaw in the idea, not everyone is static and immobile.

Okay, let's forget about state flags.

How about, when state info is available, your profile would read like this:

Country: <usa flag> United States (Montana)

I think sticking to the country flags, with an eventual profile feature that shows a more specific location, is the way to go!

If you want people to know what state you're from why don't you just write in in the 'location' section of your profile instead of a smart a** answer like the one you've got

or a stalker..

or I just want to minimize the probabilities of playing with a multi, I don't want to know the IP of anyone, but at least get a better idea of what games not to join when there is no much reputation info. for example in the case of playing in a standard game my preference is not to play against people that play from the same school. so i wish to avoid a game where I see people from the same state.

I Change my idea and I correct it:

Correct: * I think the country Flag must stay, there can be another area for a second flag, that will be the state flag and the state name.

ADD: * this can be the default options, if some one is afraid a stalker will see them trough a state flag or <insert whatever paranoid reason here>, they can always have the option to disable it.

If people are ignorant about state flags this will be a nice way to start learning something new. I don't think its a good argument to try to stop something just because you think other people don't understand it.

I am sure some of us actually think its "cool" to learn new things.

Have fun

To-Do?

I think rejected, at least for scoreboard purposes.

The state info will come from the user IP?

PostPosted: Fri Dec 29, 2006 12:05 pm
by lackattack
Yes, regional info would come from the Maxmind GeoIP database, but I have concerns over their accuracy. I want to speak to Maxmind about it. I don't want to have emails pouring in from people who are showing the wrong state.

smart thinking!

So the country is 99% accurate but the state/province is only 85% accurate.

Is it worth it?

I don't want to put in an override, so 15% of people would have to live with the wrong state appearing on their profile.
