The trouble with too many maps

If your joining this site as a new player and you go to join a game, there are too many waiting for players.

This will lead to less people staying at the site as if it takes over a day have a game fill up.............

any thoughts?

I think that the lesser played maps should be deleted if they fall under a certain percentage of plays, thus making people who want to make another map really focused on making the best map ever.

i agree but i dont think less maps would help.. maybe if the join games was sorted by maps also???

I no longer am annoyed by deadbeating noobs - they can add a defensive dimension to a game that wasnt there before, thus changing the dynamics of a map.
I host pw games from time to time.
I wouldn't mind noobs joining.
put all games in the same list (Fullest at the top)
with info on PW games... contact 'X' for the password or Captains, sergents etc. only

Lets make this site quicker for new people who join, not slower

it'd be cool to be able to sort the games by map/no. of players/no. of players needed/etc...
hold on, this is a suggestion!

how long does it take to fill a game with a famous person? - not much

how long with 2 noobs and a couple of others? - who knows?

The best thing you can do...simply play a lot of games, earn a good reputation and people will want to play with you, thus you can get your games filled. It takes effort, but if you want them filled...you can readily do it.

...Ahem...like I said.

The best thing anyone can do...simply get quite a few games under your belt, develop a good reputation, and people will want to play with you. Also when a lot of people join, they bring their friends along with them. Doing so will also increase your chances of playing a game if you get your buddies together. Really there are a lot of things you can do to get your games up faster. And for the most part, most games aren't up very long. Considering anywhere from 50-150 people join a day, the site is increasing nicely. (Though I know quite a few never come back, and some people leave after a time, but the site is still increasing in population.)

Bashes head into keyboard

forget about any existing members, ....

My mate joined up and said: (after 5 hours of doing so)

I joined a game like you said Pete, but nothings happening. What do I do?

so I texted him back and said stay where you are - check back in 12 - 24 hours to see how your game is going.

he did, but how many others don't?

I'm not bashing the site here - I'm trying to improve it.

With every few that leave, more of them come and stay....it happens at all sites. ;)

I think sorting the maps by the number of available spots makes a lot of sense. That way when people are looking for any game to play they can just click on one that's almost full and start basically right away. And as those games are filled up others will rise to the top of the waiting list (though some would stay at the bottom for a while I suppose)

Lack will be addressing the map organization in an upcoming update.

I believe there will be some sort of ranking method to it but I am not sure what exactly - some things get lost in 2-3 hour meetings ;)

I'll have to check with Lack as to what the conversion rate of signups to new recruits is, but I think it is still pretty high...either way considering there about 2500 people active on the site, that's not too shabby for 6 months of opperation.

Is it too late to make suggestions for how to organize them? I'd like to recommend a tagging system, where lack (or Andy, being the Official Map Guy) can assign overlapping categories to maps.

Then you could go to the map search page, mark off the checkboxes for "abstract" and "real location" and get "Going Underground". Or you could pick "fictional location" and "city or smaller" to get CCU, or even "Marvaddin" to get Brazil and Singapore.

I have no idea whether or not this would actually be remotely useful, but it would be cool :)

As for Jota's post, such categorical organization has been suggested before, so we'll have to see what Lack has in mind.

In reference to the post above me, if you don't like all the 'novelty' maps, I wholeheartedly suggest you go to the foundry, develop and idea, and create a map of your own for a real location or whatever you think would suit the community better. Stop bitching, and create something. :) The cartographers work hard to create maps, the least you can do is give them some respect for the work they have done. Like I said, if you don't like it, create one your own with the help of the Foundry. ;)

Lets make 2 catergories:

1. Real maps. (Classic)
2. Shitty Novelty Maps. (the rest)

Lack.... Problem solved.
