Flash Version

I did a quick forum search and did a quick scan through and didn't see this yet, so here goes.

The Suggestion:

Any thought of ConquerClub doing a Flash version like the turn based wargame site FORCES (http://www.battleforces.com) does? They have the same community setup as ConquerClub but when you play the game its Flash. So its still in the browser, but can have fancier graphics and a little easier to play interface than JavaScript. Alternatively, I guess, ConquerClub could do both. Keep its current JavaScript version and then have an option to play the Flash version.

This will improve the following aspects of the site:
  • Better User Interface
  • Zoom and Pan
  • Sound!

Cool, or too many other things more important?

One of the things I like about this site is that there's no flash and no stupid sounds...

Something that might be looked at could be a Flash viewer... like AJAX BOB or the like. It wouldn't change the gameplay, just the interface. I think one of the benefits to this site being HTML is that it's not annoying and glitzy and you can just play. A Flash viewer would load the game data and process the interface if someone wanted it, but the game runs in basic HTML like it does now. (I can play CC from my opera browser on my PocketPC even.)

Also, if the entire site was Flash, it might limit the community map-making to only those that know flash.

So the real key is, what do you want to get out of a flash browser? just simply a nicer interface and graphics?

Sure, I can agree, the sound and pretty pictures are not important. However an easier interface would be a big one. I had no problem playing CC with the pull down menus until I tried FORCES (http://www.battleforces.com), and I could just drag my units around. It just seems much easier. I wouldn't say do away do away with CC javascript, just allow a choice would be best. Its one of those things, that until you try it, you don't know its missing. Maybe its better not to try it? :-)

Dial up wouldn't be too bad. I am guessing it would be maybe a 100K-200K download. How long would that normally be for you?

not long, because i don't have dial up ..

I remember when i did tho.

But on dial up, 15 Seconds at best, i'd assume it'd be around 25 -30 tho, maybe up to 45 if it was bad.

I don't want to "drag armies around" (isn't there a greasemonkey script for that anyway?), I don't want sounds, I don't want Flash and scripts and stuff. The UI is good, there's no need to make it worse in the name of Shiny Fancy Stuff.

You actually prefer pull down menus to dragging units? Haven't you ever made a mistake with the pulldown menus? I have. "Noooo, should have moved from P2 not P4. Ruined!!!" Or some sort of internal cursing... :)

Sorry, but even with the clicking and dragging of armies, mistakes are still made. Just different types of mistakes.

I guess we could create a list of things we would want from flash, things we might want, and things we never want... Suggestions?

The non-flash version is ok for a game like Risk, only 1 unit type small maps, etc. For a game like Battleforces which is more like Axis and Allies, http://www.battleforces.com you need a full game-engine done in flash or .NET or something.

After looking at your profile & wall, this seems like less of a suggestion and more of a veiled advertisement...

I don't agree with this suggestion, i like how CC is now, it runs just fine with my comp when my net is not cutting out all the time here. If we changed it to some kind of flash version i am afraid i would no longer be able to play if i am understanding all this correctly.

nice necrobump btw.

And ya, I like how it is right now. Don't know much about how this stuff works, but based on this thread we wouldn't get any new maps, or at least very few with this suggestion, and I'm not sure whether the maps we have could be carried over or not.

I would just turn the sound off, I don't need to hear some computerized voice screaming, or swords clashing, or cannons firing just because I took a tert. Or trumpets for winning the game.

Zoom? If you only look at one part of the board at a time, you will never win. If you just can't read the territory names, try going to the larger map. If that doesn't work...how do you use other sites lol

Better graphics, again, I'd like new maps and esp. keeping all of the current ones over better graphics on the few we would get with the new system.

And please please please don't slow it down. This site has gotten much faster with updates recently, don't go back to the old ways

If you've got firefox or chrome, download clickes. If not, get firefox or chrome, then download clickies :D. The only two legit excuses for not having clickies are 1) using a public computer, which I don't think you are. and 2) my computer is too slow, which it's not if you want flash and play your battle forces game with flash

have you tried clickable maps? where you click on the map and things happen? which is your main argument........:)
