[Rules] Tutorial for New Players

Postby dcowboys055 on Sat Nov 04, 2006 11:29 pm

Lots of game websites i play or used to play had a quick tutorial to help you get started. Some of them were really useful and without them i would've struggled and probably gave up. I dont know how easy or difficult it would be to create one but i think new players would appreciate it.

Partially implemented- new players are directed through a game with Coach Bot upon joining

I like the idea.

Risk (Non-Hasbro of course), seems pretty simple to figure out, which is why the FAQ works perfectly fine. The main problem is people dont bother to read the FAQ before playing or even when they dont get it. They just quit playing.

Perhaps if something opened automatically after registering like the FAQ or a brief tutorial, there would be less deadbeats in games, and more active users on the site.

plus if they liked the way it looked on the tutorial they might be inclined to stay and play out a whole game, rather than finding out what its like the first time in a real game and then deadbeating

i actually think one of us should do the tutorial since it doesn't require lack's programming skills. all you need is some cut and paste and html knowledge.

i nominate dcowboys055.

I voted bad idea, not because its bad but because there is already better plans for noobs to learn the game being worked on.
I know Lack and his buddy trashknob are working on an Introductory flash application to explain the game better before they even sign up for a game.

Something needs to be done, even if its a simple pop up for new players before they join a game. How many times has this happened to you as the game starts?

Yet another new recruit not appretiating the game is not real time - any bets for whether he will deadbeat on us as a result.

What is really strange is if you search for his name he's played more than a few games already - so in this case i'm totally wrong. Got no idea why he posted what he did.

He has played a turn :)

Tutorial

Postby wrightfan123 on Wed Jun 06, 2007 5:12 pm

*The first time I played ConquerClub, I was puzzled with several things of gameplay. And now that I'm in a game with a person in a simialr situation, I really think we need a tutorial for the young noobs.

*The tutorial would explain how to play ConquerClub, along with an explaination of te forums, feedback, etc.

*It is needed so that noobs can walk into their first game with a knowledge of how to play. And also, the imprint of the image of a tutorial in their mind could possible remind them to check their moves when normally they would just forget

Joeyjordison said he'd do something like this one time but it never got going. As good an idea as it is, your problem will be finding someone to devote their time to it (and that someone needs to be a decent player too). At the moment, I think the "Strategy" sub-forum in General Discussion is the best bet. The problem there is that only like 5 (or is it 10?) percent of users browse the forums

New Recruits have tutorial scenarios

Postby sailorseal on Fri Mar 13, 2009 3:35 pm

Maybe before a New Recruit is fully joined they go through practice scenarios where it appears to be a game but it is not really and a computer says "Now try and deploy" and stuff like that

AI Players has already been rejected. I'm not sure that it should be first five, but I think having the option to try the game against the computer would be good.. as long as there were no points gained/lost

Or maybe a scanned notorized document proving said recruit has completed
a minimum of five Risk™ board games before signing on here?

Or mebbe not.

Playing games AI players cuts off one of the best parts of this game (for some people): the fact that you're actually playing a real person, and not just yourself (don't say it).
Being able to communicate with other players also allows the conduction of diplomacy.

No way i want to see this implanted. It seems to be hard making also. Real players involves strategy. So play them if u dont have strategie this aint the game for u.

Again.. I don't think they should play all five games against AI, but playing one single first game vs AI would give them a chance to learn how the game worked, no points would be switched, and it wouldn't count towards their 5 games to get off new recruit.
