What confused you?

When you first came to Mafia, what confused the most? The way town and Mafia worked? The lynching? The different abbreviations?

Please help with creating a FAQ which will be added into the "Terms of Mafia" thread, which will encourage more people to come to mafia (hopefully)

When you reply, please put what your actual question is, and us in the CC Mafioso forum will create an answer and so will be seen soon. :D

E.G. Question - What is Day and Night phase?

Something that has always confused me (and still does occasionally) is when the proper circumstances for roleclaiming are. I understand that it is mostly done only when you are at L-1 but under other circumstances, why wouldn't you roleclaim. For example, if you are a vanilla townie, is there any hurt in saying that at the very beginning of the game? And on power roles, should you claim to be a cop as soon as you find one scum, or should you wait to claim until you find at least one more?

Also, you might want to include a section explaining WIFOM. It took me a while to figure it out.

Some of the roles confused me/ still do. I never knew what a jester was, or a busdriver.

Your wish is our command. :) We'll have these done and whatever else we get and you'll see the questions pretty soon!

Claiming vanilla townie at the beginning of the game if you are one is a big mistake. For starters, you could be lying and it also makes you expendable as a lynch, people will say there is no harm in losing a vanilla townie and therefore they will be happy to lynch you. If you survive the lynch you will put more power roles in danger of being killed off at night as with more townies exposed they are more likely to be hit by the mafia as their chances of hitting a power role is increased.

With cops it is generally common practice to claim after you have found scum but not before. If you claim after finding scum then 9 times out of 10 you can get that scum lynched, plus then have protection tonight if the doctor is still around (N.B. I have always pulled the scam that if the doctor is dead, I say back up doc protect me even when there is never actually a back up doc most the time as it may prevent the mafia from targetting you). At this point it is also a good idea to name who you have cleared as the more information the better for the town. However, if you choose to wait you expose yourself to death at night and also have no protection - plus like their are scum tells for town there are also often cop tells for the mafia, and it is quite easy to spot a cop from the other townies just by the way they act during the day phase - often a little more outspoken and defensive of certain people (particularly those they've cleared so far).

What Nag just said is correct, however if you are in a big game with an unorthodox mod sanities might come in play. An insane cop gets his results inverted to the opposite (and doesn't know he's insane), this kind of things. Sanities are rarely used anymore for some reason though so it's more an exception where waiting for at least 2 results might help more if you feel in no danger to be killed. That and not be too freaked out if you get counterclaimed by a second cop :D
Some players, when they catch scum and claim cop, prefer to not reveal town investigated people as these people will then become priority targets for scum, but it can be a risky strategy; you really gotta be sure your ass is safe if you decide for this method so you can actually reveal the investigation if the target is in danger of being lynched.

Just the lesson I was trying to teach in my newb game. Although I once got counter claimed by a legitimate second cop in a simple C9 game

Rofl, what part of the game was c9  Maybe the mod understood all roles had to be randomized between townie cop and doc

It was modded by our dear simon viavent (no offense mate) and the name of the game was:

"So, I'm gonna try a simple C9 game".

Tried and failed
