Times Square Map

Sup guys, first map... Wanted to do a map for my hometown: NYC, (because we need one!). I saw all the maps of the 5 Burroughs and didn't want to make another rehash of the same concept, so I came up with this instead.

I wanted mostly to make this map tough to truly master, like NYC. Territories are hard to hold, so they each yield alot of armies. I expect alot of hard defensive and offensive play on this map. I also wanted to incorporate another strategic element, so I came up with the idea for billboards, these give the player in control an additional army every round. They are also, as i designed it, often the bridges between territories, so i expect them to switch owners often.

Do your worst guys, cheers.
dan

huh, I didn't realize New York City was a perfect rectangle with an X through it! :)

I think NYC definitely needs and deserves a map, but I don't see how this in any way captures the flavor of the city, or of the bright lights and activity of Times Square. I think a really solid burroughs map needs to happen, or maybe a map of Central Park.

well, thats not a map of nyc... its a map of times square... theres a huge difference... dunno if you've ever been there, but that is what it really looks like (yes, there is an X through it). if you can maybe explain to me a way of capturing the bright lights of times square, like maybe a solar flare with photo shop? something constructive like that, instead of just suggesting other maps, thatd be best. thanks.

i like it but it is to small. try to extend it a bit further into the city to make it bigger or do a map with all 5 sections of the city as contenants so you have like brooklin, manhatin, ect...

qwert why you want elimate his map?!

(sorry but you had a hissy fit at Teya when she said the same as you) :P

I like it, but I don't see what you're getting at with the:

Territories are hard to hold, so they each yield alot of armies.

the armies are WAY off

You cannot have the billboards as +1 each, what if in their first turn someone started with 3 of them? plus, green and purple are very very good continents for +3... I can imagine people only going billboards and green/purple...

And the big error, in no way does this map represent times square..

and the "new" element, i'm afraid it's been suggested, then scraped countless times before.

This may be true, i do see what you mean... if only there were a way to guarantee that all 4 billboards are owned by neutral 3's at the start. This is a problem i'm currently having in the montreal map, im playing a 2v2, and the other team one of them started out with the entire teal island (you know what i'm talking about) and the other teammate started with downtown (+1 bonus).

I do want to do something a little more than just territories. Something fresh... its tough.

As for the idea of the 5 Burroughs, as i said before, i would love to do it, but its already being 'done' by several people at once.... the closest of which is this guy who's on 'vacation' from the map. I'm not sure what that means, but if he drops the project i'll gladly pick it up at that time.

I'm having a new idea about how to do this map. Maybe i'll redo it in a 3-d fashion, like the king of the hill map, with the perspective being from ground level, looking up and the armies would be climbing stories on three buildings, plus things on the street. this idea requires some sketching out, its rather rough at the moment... can anyone add to this?

the thing is sooo fucking ugly...it needs a complete makeover to make it slightly playable, and honestly, its not worth the time

I was going to say the same thing, but didnt want to seem like I was "attacking" qwert.

This map needs a MAJOR makeover at the moment. The idea is good, but the map isnt very appealing.

the map is ugly, but nyc does deserve one, but id rather have a map of the entire city than just Times Square.

I completely agree.

I agree too. Manhattan is not to be confused with nyc though. As i've already said twice, there are several nyc maps in the works (?) if we can put those to rest, i'll make a proper one.

To start, yes I've been there. And I'll say again, a rectangle with some primary colors and an X through it doesn't capture the spirit.

Here's an idea: what if you took an actual street level photo of Time Square and make the lights, buildings, signs, and other elements of your photo the territories. Using the image below as an example: Panasonic attacks JVC, Cats attacks Les Miz, yellow cab attacks McDonalds, etc. You get a really good photo and drop some army circles on 40 or so items and you've got yourself an entirely original map that really portrays Times Square.

hmm, let me see if I've got this straight:
1. you propose, in all bold, an idea for a ground level map and ask for suggestions.
2. I suggest that you use an actual photo to make this map
3. 20 minutes later you repost your first post as if to suggest I didn't see it.

have I got this right, danbemp? I guess instead of a suggestion you just wanted somebody to tell you what a great idea it is. Well it could be a good map if you have the graphics skills to completely recreate Times Square in photoshop, or you could start with a photo as I suggested.

You've got to have a little bit thicker skin if you're going to make it through the map development process.

sorry i misunderstood you, i thought you were suggesting exactly what i had suggested... i didn't realize that i didnt mention i'd use a photo as a backdrop, i definitely don't possess enough skill to recreate times square, nor do i pretend to. So to set it straight, i'm agreeing with you:

1. bridseyeview should be dropped in favor of street level.
2. photo should be used as guideline.

but now lets move on, do you really think all this is plausible?
my skin is pretty thick, thats why im putting myself out there.

do you know anything about the NYC map in dev? is it going to be finished do you think?

This isnt in your post, but i think white needs some sort of bonus for your map (chinese checkers) maybe if you hold the center 6 ?

A complete map of NYC including tunnels and bridges would be a great map.
