Info/Planing on the map

-there is 42 terts. and 7 conts.
-as you can see there is a big yellow and black line in the middle of the map, it is there so you know that it is impassable.
-also, if you look at the bottom of the map you will see fairlawn and congres heights there is a bride there, and both fairlawn and congres heights can attack SW water front.
-fix the names as right now there are the prev. color.
-put maybe the white house, washington monument, etc.
-adding bonuses and a legand.

The Potomac River's a bit wide, and, what's that thing jutting out the southwest?

Overall, I'd say go for it. I'm looking forward to a updated map soon...

Like someone said it's too wide.

Try to find a way to blend in the land with the picture behind it. Right now they clash WAY too much. See the Rail USA map thread for how they did it. Just ideas mind you. I don't mean copy what they did.

A different approach you could take is to have the whole USA be the background. Then have this be a zoom in of just the DC area. Kinda like how the Chicago area of Rail USA jumps up. I'm not totally clear here, but I think you can understand or someone else an explain it better.

It helps us if you can explain where you got your borders from. I have no idea how this is broken up. Did you just make it up? Did you get it from somewhere? We need to know this because otherwise it's hard to comment on and say well it's bad or it's good. It's better when doing a real life area to have real life borders. For authenticities sake, you're making a map of the area it should be split up how it is in real life.

Tell us more specifics about the map. How many territories are there etc..?

from the looks of it you have WAY too many territories. You're going to have spacing issues.

Right now the letters in the title jump around. I don't know why. They should all be level.

i know that it needs to blend into the background but this is just a "preview" of what it will look like with the territorys and what the bonuses will look on the map, until i start the real work then this is just a Preveiw of what it will look like, not what it will be.

i will try to shrink it a bit but i'm not sure how it will look.

the background i am working with, like i said above this is just a preveiw of what it would look like with territorys, a background and bonuses.

I don't know why they "jump ip and down" but i will make it so they don't on the real map.

hope this will help with the comments.

I lived in DC for four years, and I can't make heads or tails of how you split up the territories. Plus, I don't think it's that great of an idea to have too much of Virginia in the map. A South-America style continent in Virginia, with two routes in (via the Key Bridge and maybe the Long Bridge) and 4-5 territories (i.e. Rosslyn, Arlington, National Airport, the Pentagon, and Crystal City) would do about right. That way you could focus more on the city itself, and give you room within territories to have monuments that bring a bonus when collected.

How familiar are you with the city, Unit?

The great thing about DC is that there are a ton of neighborhoods and what not that can be used as territories.... plus the city itself has straight edges and straight lines separating the four overarching parts of the city: Northwest (where Georgetown and Dupont Circle and Foggy Bottom and Adams Morgan and the Kennedy Center and what not are located), Southwest (the smallest part, home to Washington Harbor), Northeast (kind of a ghetto), and Southeast (one of the craziest ghettos in America), with the 'tourist' DC (White House, various presidential monuments, various memorials to wars, various museums) being dead center in the target that separates the city.

Look it up. Read a little about the place. Download some maps. PM me if you want. DC could make a hell of a map. And I would love to see a good DC map, since it's the only other city that I've ever really lived in besides LA.

As of now, there is too much gray wasted space. take that all out, and the map is tiny... Good idea though if you can make it look nice

Yes, I live in Montgomery County... just to the NW...

Anyhow, I agree, you should have the divisions of NW, NE, SW, and SE DC. And can you explain the logic of the territories a bit? I'm lost...

Hey Unit, thanks for contacting me on this. I think that D.C. would make for a great map, as the basic area works and the graphics options will make this a lot of fun to work on. Monuments everywhere! :)

I'd highly suggest you not worry about what it looks like right now. Just throw it together as well as you can with the software you are using, and post something for us to discuss. Post a disclaimer saying that the graphics are a rough draft, and that you're looking for comments on playability only. If the map can spend a few weeks in the Foundry discussing how it will play we can hash out issues like:
• territory names and locations
• attack routes (bridges) across the water
• uncrossable borders
• bonuses

When it gets to the point where it looks like you have the playability issues behind you I'd be happy to work with you on the graphics to give it smoother borders, a nice font, water and land textures, monuments, a more subtle background, etc. That phase will take weeks or months in itself, and we don't need the headache of constantly changing territory locations while we're trying to make it look nice.

the continents are based off of surching i did and i think there good but i need your help with them, so if you don't think there right then please post

frankly you haven't really given us anything where we can give you relevant comments.

we need territories to know how the gameplay will be. You don't want graphics comments yet so there's not much else. I mean you need to cut down the width of the map. you should do that now to get a better idea of how everything will fit.

where did you get the idea to separate the continents the way you did? Telling us these things helps us to know whether these are good decisions or not. We can't really say much of anything because unless we know how DC is split up we won't know if you did it in a realistic way or not.

show us where you got the idea to split up the area. that helps. telling us there's going to be 30-40 territories does practically nothing.

the foundation of a map is very important. start with a real map and figure out how to separate it. from there try to separate with realistic territories as well. try to keep in mind spacing issues, but just give us something we can comment on. you don't even need to add anything graphical at this point. just separate continents and territories so gameplay discussions can happen.

i split the land by random guessing, i was hoping that someone would tell me where i need to move them, i'll try to get a real map of it but its hard, i can't find anything on google that i can base it off of.

i also named them from what is in them like the Pentagon area is where teh pentagon is and washington's area is where the most things that is named after washington, Etc.

i will resize it and post it again, just hold on and it will be up soon.

That picture takes alot of time to load on my computer, Widowmakers when aliens attack took less time to load.. I'd suggest compressing it in jpeg or gif format if you want to get serious.

I suspect "Ghetto lands" is a title that many residents of D.C. would object to. I'd rather live in Congrees Heights (sic).
