California Map, worth pursuing?

Should I pursue this rough draft? Why or why not?
Keep in mind this is a very very rough draft, and territories, bonuses, gameplay, etc. can be changed.

A few initial thoughts.

1. the size of the map is 800x600 is this a large or small map?

keeping in mind that hte size restrictions are:

small 600x600

large 800X800

2. alot of the terr look too small for terr names.

3. bonuses need to be worked on.

4. the bottom right hand side is empty and really needs to be filled up.

Despite my constructive critisim the theme looks rather nice. I would continue to work on it. taking into concideration the points ive mentioned.

I tend to dislike state maps, but as this is my state I'll put my concerns in the area aside for now.

1. You need to read the "How To Make a Map" thread in the foundry, and include basic info.
2. What are the breaks based on? Because I think you can come up with natural unpassable borders that make more sense - coastal range, sierras, transverse range, death valley, sierras, Sacramento and California Rivers, etc.
3. Come up with a theme for the map... is this 21st century california, in which you can work in such industries as entertainment, agriculture, wine production, tourism? Is it 19th century gold rush and westward expansion? Having a theme will lead to a more complete and impressive final product.
4. Big map, but small playing area... going to be hard to put titles and army circles in many territories. You'll need to make better use of space, which is tricky in a funny-shaped state.
5. Where's the bay? :)

There's 44 territories?

Not a bad draft. You're going to have trouble with fitting circles and labels for all those territories though.

I'm not sure how I feel about the background, but that's not too important at this juncture.

I think your bonuses are too high in most places.

When I have time I'll give the map another look and be more specific

There's one thing for sure: You can't have a +8 with only 3 borders to defend. The +6 has more borders to defend!

Constructive Criticism.

It is very nice. Just one other thing, though...What are those arrows floating around where Nevada is supposed to be?

plains and wood camp, +5 on siege!, has 2 borders plus an attack route.

Those counties don't lend themselves very well to army numbers.

Lol and I can't exactly tell where LA is.. come on! lol... But yeah looks good for a rough draft... you definitely need to work on defining the territories and their bonuses though for one thing... as oakie said the theme might make it more interesting

this is the large version, although I can easily shrink it if necessary

gimil wrote:2. alot of the terr look too small for terr names.
yes, I am going to re-do the territory borders if I get enough support

gimil wrote:3. bonuses need to be worked on.
agreed, once I get the territories worked out this will become easier

gimil wrote:4. the bottom right hand side is empty and really needs to be filled up.
this are will be filled with game instructions (bonuses, gameplay, etc.) or I will just reduce the size

I'll include that on my next update if there is enough support

they are based on a map that I found online. The splits were already done and I used that as a guideline. Natural borders sound good, but I'm not too sure about that yet.

great idea

I will probably change the territory borders to make it more army number friendly.

thanks for the feedback. As stated before, I will be changing the territory sizes and bonuses.

I was just thinking, what if I made this a pro sports themed map? There are many pro sports team in California, and the continents could be different teams territories or something?

Any other theme ideas previously not suggested?

Plenty of teams, but they're all in three small clusters: Bay Area, Sacramento, SoCal (which I guess could be two clusters if you split LA and San Diego). You could include the AA and AAA teams in the central valley, but that wouldn't have much appeal.

In the big picture I'd love to see some sports themed maps... soccer (football) clubs of Europe, ballparks of the US, etc. An MLB map would be brilliant, with bonuses for holding each division.

Something like rail usa but with sports stadiums.

I like this map quite a bit so far.

I think this map may make it to the final forge, maybe...

Themes:
Gold Rush
21st Century
Sports Teams

what else?

How about an environmental theme... Fight for water resources? Land preservation? Points for holding state/national parks.

Tourism map? Golden Gate Bridge, Alcatraz, Hollywood sign, beaches, wine country, Tahoe, Yosemite, ski resorts, Highway 1, big trees, etc.

That would be quite cool.

As far as the existing cali map, one thing you might be able to do to cut down on the empty space is give the whole state a tilt, like on the portugal map. Some of the potential themes are good, but I'm ideologically drawn to the water concept... soooo much you can do with that, and it puts the whole state in play (irrigation in the Central Valley and Inland Empire, aqueducts, Owens River, Colorado River, the Sacramento Delta, etc).

like I said a while ago. Do it, I had this idea before too. But for the love of GOD please put no space between the continents.
