Dante's Inferno

Well, I've been wanting to make a map for a while. I've been working on this one for about an hour and I have the roughest draft in the history of rough drafts (I haven't even scaled the size), but here it is...
Please note that I haven't specified what'll belong to what, but I'm thinking of having "continents" being divided like "Cerberus' Lair," and split it into 4-5 parts (including nearby monsters/landscape), or for example dividing Satan up into pieces by his wings, heads, torso, etc.
One other thing I ask is that you guys tell me if I should just drop it right off, in case it's a crappy idea ;)
It's not too late for me to move the areas around or anything, so feel free to give honest feedback. Thanks!

Eeeewww... ugly. What the hell is Dante's Inferno, anyway, is it hell?

Yeah, it's a book about a guy's journey into hell. I took a lot of liberties with it (especially since Hell is divided up into 9 rings, and my map has 3 areas vaguely resembling rings), but I think it still grasps the general idea ;)

This would be unbelievably awesome. I'm confused, though - what're the territories? And how do those kick-ass images play into this?

Well, the monsters themselves would be parts of the territories, and the areas around them. Like the Cenetaur could be a territory, and the valley he's standing over could be 2-3, and maybe together with the burning city above him they'd make a "continent."

Cool idea, not great map so far. It shouldn't be too hard to get teritory names. Names of demons, of sins, of sinners can all go in there.

Of course, and I have them all planned ;)
The only problem is deciding how many territories it should be divided into, where, and how many continents there should be.
I'm thinking somewhere between 30-36 territories :P

Great artwork! =D> Now if you can whip up some nicely balanced territories I'd play for it sure...

Well, I'll put out a second draft tomorrow with potential territories, but I'm more than open to suggestions ;)

I still don't see how it's going to be divided up... where are the borders and such?

Okay, this is to get the general idea... I haven't added the visible borders for the areas that are one piece of art (like between Purgatory and Minos' Lair), and I haven't added paths between the territories, but with the names and background colors you can at least see where I'm coming from ;)
I'm more than happy to shift the builds of the continents, too, so don't worry about them being oddly formed.

I'd advise drawing the borders before the names/pictures of beasts and such. Right now, it doesn't look pretty. Also the territory names should be all the one colour.

They're different colors for visibility's sake ;)
And I was just throwing all this up as an example... obviously, I'm not going to leave it like that, but I'm just doing a few quick adjustments and things, waiting for my wife to get home :P

Where are the flatterers, the panderers and the seducers?? ;)

Great idea for a map, although I'd kinda like to see the rings aspect used a bit more.

Cool idea and artwork. I'd split the continents up into the nine levels, and then countries can be the types of sins or monsters assosiated with each

Haha, I did use the seducers
:P
I'll name a couple of the continents after the rings, but I won't be able to manage all 9, and their sub-rings :P

xactly what i was gonna say-- dantes trilogy is based round the idea of rings, whether ur in hell, purgatory, or paradise...
is there ne way to xpand the map to include all three realms?

The problem is that by virtue of the fact that they're rings, you could only attack the rings above or below you (and the territories from side to side, of course)
I can maybe throw in another couple of territories and try turning the rings more into wedges. So unless I get enough feedback on the ring idea, I might just go with that.

EDIT: Found a pic illustrating my point. For example, ring 8 has quite a few sub-rings, so no matter what I'd have to cut things down quite a bit.

Ah apologies, I didn't notice those seducers hiding up there!

My thinking on the rings is that they would make the map a bit more unique, and more true to the inferno, rather than making it just a standard map with some nifty artwork.

The trouble is I don't have a particluar suggestion in mind at the moment... so if one comes to me I'll be back!

You've got a great map idea!
May I ask you if you copied map's name and draft from the following one?

Alright, it took some slight modding, but here's a second version of all of it with 9 continents, arranged somewhat ring-like ;)
I know that the Vespule wasn't actually a ring, but I think 10 continents would have broken things up too small
:P

EDIT: Sorry, the last post came in as I was posting mine :P
Yes, that's the image I used. I was planning on linking it in when I was a bit further along in the development :P

In any case I am really interessed to develope this map, also if maybe could be a good idea to contact the original author (Daniel Heald: drh_oz@hotmail.com) in order to ask him the authorization to use his wonderful draft!

Well looking at the other images that people have added - I think your flat layout, detracts from other peoples drawings.
You really need to re think your layout to show this ever deepening / decreasing in diameter image.

I've never read the book - but it's obvious from the various other images posted that these people are showing something thats got a common theme.

You need to use this more in your proposed map. This site needs a 3D looking map - and it looks like this map is the one that needs it more than most.

If you liked the book so much to bother making a map of it - then do it justice and go 3D.
