1936

The Siege of Madrid

The Siege of Madrid was a three-year siege of the Spanish capital city of Madrid, during the Spanish Civil War of 1936 to 1939. Madrid was held by various forces loyal to the Second Spanish Republic and was besieged by Spanish Nationalist and allied troops under Francisco Franco. The Battle of Madrid in November 1936 was the most concentrated fighting in the city, when the Nationalists made their most determined attempt to take Madrid. The city, besieged from October 1936, eventually fell to the Nationalists on 28 March 1939.

1937

The End of the North Front

The Iron Ring (Spanish: CinturĂ³n de Hierro, Basque: Burdinazko Gerrikoa), was a vast, labyrinthine fortification around Bilbao, consisting of bunkers, tunnels, and fortified trenches in several rings, protected by artillery. It was hurriedly built during the Spanish Civil War by the Basque Government. However during the battle of Bilbao it was breached as it was not finished and its designer Alejandro Goicoechea had defected to the Nationalist side with the plans.

1938

The Aragon Offensive

The Aragon Offensive was a Nationalist campaign during the Spanish Civil War, which began after the Battle of Teruel. The offensive began on March 7, 1938, and ended on April 19, 1938. The offensive smashed the Republican forces and overran Aragon and conquered parts of Catalonia and the Levante.

1939

The End of the War

Franco's troops conquered Catalonia in a whirlwind campaign during the first two months of 1939. Tarragona fell on 15 January, followed by Barcelona on 26 January and Gerona on 2 February. On 27 February, the United Kingdom and France recognized the Franco regime.

Franco declares the end of the war. However, small pockets of Republicans fight on.
Only Madrid and a few other strongholds remained for the Republican forces. On 28 March, with the help of pro-Franco forces inside the city, Madrid fell to the Nationalists. The next day, Valencia, which had held out from Nationalists for close to two years, also surrendered. Franco proclaimed victory in a radio speech aired on 1 April, when the last of the Republican forces surrendered.

Beautiful graphics, great write-up!

Of course I'm in. Although it looks as if you're full, I'll throw my name in, just in case you decide to go for 32 instead of 16.

Love the theme - One of the most interesting turning points in 20th century history, plus I know people who fought. I'd like to join if a space opens up.
