Congrats to No. 9-seed General Flashman, who is the first player to reach the World Championship quarterfinals with a four-set victory over No. 8 markec. Looks like the luck of the cards doomed markec's chances for taking it to a fifth set.

Play continues with an updated bracket being posted late tonight.

Tournament quarterfinals should be underway in a few days...#3 seed b00060 advances with a three-set sweep and #7 flexmaster moves on in a hard-fought five-setter against negoeien. So far, the higher seed has advanced in four of the five completed matches.

We have our first major upset of the tourney with #15 shoop76 taking out #2 olkok in four sets...olkok struggled with his serve in the fourth set going three straight rounds without conquering a territory.

Available quarterfinal matches have been sent out, while we wait on the two active first-rounders to wrap up.

Highlander is down to four regions on South America but comes back to take the pivotal third set in his four-set win over heyheymymy. He is the first to reach the tennis tournament's Final Four.

bracket updated...congrats to #1 DBandit on his 4-set win in the quarterfinals, finishing his match in dominating fashion with a 6-1 finale on the Asia map.

One semifinal is set, while the other side of the bracket continues quarterfinal action. We'll enjoy some turkey and football, then get the Final Four going sometime over the weekend. :)

The quarterfinal between b00060 & ga7 just concluded in what was an epic battle with tiebreaker (16 rounds  ) in the 5th set!

CCN: How do you feel after this victory ga7?
ga7: Exhausted! b00060 is CC's Davydenko, he keeps coming, makes no faults, and just puts it right on the line when he wants to. When I was leading 5-1 (grabbing a +3 bonus) he just did 4 straight winners to catch back! (taking 6 territs and almost breaking me)

CCN: What are your thoughts about the next opponent?
ga7: It's gonna be tough, I saw on the panel they were entering a 5th set also, I can only hope he'll be as wasted as I am today. I hope flex will make it, it'd be fun for the organizer to have a shot at the finals :P

It's a tight back-and-forth battle in the early going of the 5th set with neither player getting an edge off the drop as far as I can tell. :)

I've gotta be pulling for GA7 after my desperate comeback bid fell short against him in the first round, but I have to wonder the impact of playing back to back 5 setters will have on him in the semis... Hopefully he'll be able to rest up and take home the title. If not, I suppose flex would be my sentimental favorite on account of our days on the Oregon track team.

I survived a second-straight 5-set battle to reach the semis...both of which are ongoing as I speak.

Thanks for the tourney Flex, it was by far the most fun I had in a 1vs1 tourney. Super active TO, cool setting, strong opponents, hope there'll be a 2010 edition :D

Congrats to our tournament winner ga7, who took the #6 seed into the World finals, survived a couple five-set battles early on then smashed myself in the semis and beat Highlander Attack in four sets in the finals. Ga7 finished the tournament with an impressive 24-7 match record.

Well done, and thanks to all who played. I'll probably run something similar next summer...I always try to come up with at least a tournament or two that is based on the prize $$$ concept, so perhaps we'll see you again. :)
