Subprime Crisis 2008 [Winner: gunner1980]

Let's try something with some immediate relevancy. This is the sub prime tournament. It has two phases:

Part 1. Banks, Originate As Much Loans as Possible, Regardless of Credit (Hey, Investors Will Eat that Sh!t up). Borrowers, Rack it Up, Baby (They're Practically Giving It Away!?)

Part 2. Get Bailed Out by the Deep Pockets (That Sh!t is Toxic... sell, sell, sell / Mortgage reformation)

Here's how it will work. Each player will play 4 matches of 5 player, standard, flat, fog and will be randomly matched up with other players into four brackets that will play: 1 game on Madness!, 1 on Prohibition Chicago, 1 on San Francisco, 1 on NYC (the american dream in a few select bubble locations). This is where loan out your points - every time you win, you go deeper in debt borrowing points form the losers, getting more cash.... while the bankers get more fees, bigger bonuses, and so forth.

At the end of the first round of games, the players will be ranked according to who has "lent" out the most capital and who has "borrowed" the most. The 4 biggest "balance sheets", both positive & negative, will be sent for a bail out to the US Senate. There, the the biggest point winners and losers will slog it out. It will be 8 player, standard, sunny *UPDATE*: CARDS TO BE SET BY VOTE OF FINALISTS** (about time), as the bankers with their toxic loans fight for a bail out package against the "homeowners" who resist sending their tax dollars to wall street along with their monthly mortgage payments. Who will win? Only one way to find out... winner of the senate match will walk away with all the $$$ and the tournament win.

Entry is open to freemium, but you must have all four slots open for the first round as games will go simultaneous (you will get a 1 week warning when sign ups get close to filling so to clear your slate).

I am going to initially set this for 20 players. Here is what it will look like... despite all the hub-bub, this is a really simple tournament:

With 20 players, we are going forward with the full 4-map qualifier rather than the three I proposed above. I'm afraid by the end of this tournament you will know the "Madness" of impending foreclosure on the cherished family home...

16 views and no interest... geeezzzz... guess everybody's eyes to glaze over when we start going into finance issues. Well, to fix that, I've added a visual prop with lots of pretty colors

Actually, I forgot to post "in", but I have a question. So basically, you are either trying to win everything or lose everything, right? But in the finals, would it really matter?

[in though]

Well, sort of... you are trying to win as many points as possible in the first round, but if it looks like you are going to lose, then you want to lose as many points as you can (i.e., leverage and take a big risk). Simply suiciding out of the game or deadbeating is unlikely to pay off, because then someone who has a higher rank might win, and you lose less points. You want to try to control the outcome of the game. And, because you won't really know how many points the other people in the tournament are losing until the games are over, it's going to probably be better to have a "win" strategy than a lose strategy. But when the dust settles, the four "biggest losers" will get to roll for the win along with the four biggest winners. Think of it this way: there are four games and five players in each bracket. If each player takes one game, then the only player with four losses is probably going to be the one in the finals, but not definitely (they could have a really really low rank and only lose 1 point each game or something. In that case, their only real strategy is to win).

In the finals, the idea is that there is a huge 8 player pot, so whoever win gets away with the windfall. It doesn't matter how you got to the finals. If you win in the Senate, you win the tournament.

I like the idea, but not the No Cards in the final. Is that negotiable - as the terms of a loan might be?

He he, sure. We'll say that the vote of the 8 finalists can pick the cards for the finals. If you get 51%, you can have esc, flat, whatever.

Wow - I am really surprised interest is so low. This would be a pretty fast, short tournament that's not so different that a "second chance" tournament, and any other "random bracket" tournament. Why no interest? Can nobody appreciate the economic times we live in???

If we don't have at least 15 sign ups by the end of this week, I'm going to scrap this. If we have 15, I will go forward with 3 games instead of four in the brackets, using the cities and dropping madness. That means freemium can get by with three open slots.

[George Bush Impresario]: We have a big problem. We must act now. The markets have seized. Unless we take action there will be massive bank failures (but don't panic, Paulson's plan will fix it). I have asked Congress to start this program right now. All we need is five more votes, and our plan can go forward.
[End of public service announcement]

Updated to this point. Only 5 more players needed!
