The poll is obviously flawed, so go with what best fits.

Technically speaking, I am a member in good standing of the "Lost Tribe of Accabonac" but that has nothing to do with the real Native Americans, but with people who went to East Hampton public schools.

Well, I was born in the Continent, so I consider myself fully native.

directly from Latin nativus "innate, produced by birth," from natus, past participle of nasci (Old Latin gnasci) "be born,"

You probably know this already, Sym, but many of us US Americans claim Native American ancestry, although that's not often the case.

But we're all mutts, man. The only way to sort out the different places we're all from would be to DNA test us, and even that's not conclusive.

I'd vote for "I might have Native American ancestry," and it's certainly part of my family's folklore, so there may be some truth to it, but I haven't ever seen any documents other than an old photograph with some distant relatives who do look dark-skinned, but it's hard to be certain.

A couple of studies have determined that between 4-5% of US nationals have Native American ancestry. This Cornell study found that most of the Americans who were found to have Native American ancestry didn't realize it, and those who thought they did actually didn't: http://3cpg.cornell.edu/index.cfm/page/ ... roject.htm

French.

But I would put "I might have" some native tribe in me, but not 100% sure on that. Hell, I know I have Irish, German, Welsh, and Scandinavean blood in me, and that's only one side of my family. My biological father's side is a complete unknown.

I wonder if Native Americans can be considered native Americans since their ancestors migrated here from Asia (most likely). I think we need clarification from Symmetry on this question.

By that definition, you could say we're all africans.

We're only going back 30,000 years or so.

But this reminds me of that special on animal planet, the mock-u-mentary about how mermaids were real? It was pretty interesting, I'll say that.

Sure. But where does "nativeness" end? Am I less native than a descendant of a Jamestown colonist because my grandfather was an immigrant? Is the Jamestown colonist less native than a descendant of a Navajo because he came to American X years after the ancestors of the Navajo?

"Most likely?^, I'm not sure if even you believe your question to be valid.

UH.. since when is the Cherokee nation the only native American tribe?

I can trace some back to the tribes of the Iroquois nation, who occupied a lot of what become the US colonies.

I used the term "most likely" because that's the term archaeologists use. Perhaps your beef is with them.

When you say "we need clarification", what do you mean by "we"?

Me. I need clarification. Where do you draw the line with the use of the term "native?" For example, FT appears to think that a descendant of a Jamestown colonist is a native compared to me.

How native would do you consider yourself, say, as a percent. I'm guessing that being Greek is still important, for example.

Nah, that's a misquote. I think you are less native than a descendant of a Jamestown colonist. I'm born and raised in New Hampshire(Yankee) so I've had this discussion many times and yes, I consider myself an expert on this very trivial subject. ;)
