Help me plan my trip to New York

Postby kizkiz on Wed Oct 01, 2014 1:09 pm

My other half and I are going to New York city for a week in November.
We have never been before, so will be doing the various touristy bits.
I figure there must be a fair few residents on this forum who live there and who might know of any decent places to eat, drink etc
You can read as much as you like, but there's nothing like a local who knows the best local places to go
Also, any advice on black friday shopping? The other half wants to do it. I don't....we're doing it
cheers

kizkiz, do you know what area of the city you are staying? It may help if you advise that. Cabs can be expensive, unless you plan on using the subway a lot.

I live on Long Island but I do go into the City on occasion. There are so many restaurants in Manhattan, and it all depends on what you like to eat and what you want to see. Price is also a very important factor. There are many good and affordable places to eat here. The theater district has a lot of great places to eat. The dining areas withing the Museum of Modern Art (MOMA) all have great food.

I hear the ghost of Lou Reed is still playing in the village, and if you're a really, really faithful fan you can walk down the street and hear Heroin or Last Great American Whale oozing out of the bricks in the clubs.

Crown access is already sold out for November... but buy your tix at least a couple of weeks before you go to get pedestal access.

Gotta walk central park to view the city from inside out. also if you intend to visit the memorial you need to reserve in advance through the website. Taking the empire state building to the top and looking down , is a lot of fun , and its not an all day affair. statut of liberty will consume most of ur day. They have dinner boat cruises that circle manhattan and is most beautiful especially if your looking for sum head that night . They also have double decker bus tours , which is awesome too , that will pass by the cathedral , awesome inside. well cheers . Sounds like you have enough time to plan a winner

There are some awesome Irish pubs that won't take any money with the queen on it.

Suggest you go in with pounds only, try to pay and it will be free. :D

Are they run by those sort of 4th generation 'Irish'-Americans who think funding the IRA is trendy?

Yes, but they weren't very happy when terrorism happened in their front yard.

Good choice. Line isn't much shorter, though. The tree probably won't be lit, but it should at least be up (it gets put up earlier every year), and you should be able to get out onto the rink.
kizkiz wrote:liberty - staten island ferry. It's free. lol
Once you get off at St. George, get right back on. Having lived there for over 20 years, I can tell you there is absolutely NOTHING worth seeing on Staten Island - especially when it's cold out.

If you were coming in the summer, I'd say head out to Coney Island - that's my neck of the woods - but boardwalks aren't fun when it's cold.
Definitely hit up a couple of museums if you can - everybody knows MoMA, the Met and the Guggenheim, but the Museum of the City of NY is up near the northeast corner of the park, and they've always got interesting stuff there.
Go see something on Broadway. There are always a lot of great shows playing, so you really can't go wrong.
Plenty of good kosher delis in town - Katz's on Houston gets all the press because of When Harry Met Sally, but the 2nd Ave. Deli (which is not actually on 2nd Ave., although it used to be) is great, too, and usually less crowded.
There are about 10,000 Ray's Pizzas, all claiming to be the original. I highly doubt any of them actually are, and I wouldn't recommend any of them.
If you want to try NY pizza (and you do), go to John's. The Times Square location is my favorite - it used to be a church, and it's beautiful. Sit upstairs if you can.
If I think of anything else, I'll post.
Overall, touristy stuff might be a little less crowded than usual because it's cold, but you'll still be fighting through a sea of bodies. People WILL stop in the middle of the sidewalk. ALL. THE DAMN. TIME. So, good luck.

If you're going to be here for Black Friday...well, we don't have any Walmarts or anything (at least, not yet). Ideally, you'd want to stay away from the major department and electronics stores, but that may not be possible. What kind of things will you/she be looking to get?
Also, be advised - the day of the Macy's Parade, everything between 5th and 9th Avenues will be a mess from 77th to 34th Streets, and the craziness may well leak out of that area, too.

By the way, I work in (north) east midtown, so if you want to talk to a real New Yorker, we can meet up for dinner or a quick lunch or something at some point. Maybe we can get AoG to take the subway uptown, and if we're really lucky, tzor could come in on the LIRR. Just putting that out there.

Cheers Sempai, that's just what i was looking for
Pizza and deli very much on the to do list

Black Friday - I believe the main thing is clothes for both of us. I'm 2m tall and have large feet, so shoes for me. I fancy a nice watch and maybe a ring for the missus, so somewhere for jewellery too.

Don't have the current itinery to hand, but am very much up for a meet at some point. I'll have a look in the morning
