Girl admits to lying about sixth grade classmates cutting off her dreadlocks

A 12-year-old black girl from Virginia has recanted an accusation that her white sixth grade classmates pinned her down and cut off her dreadlocks, her family said in a statement Monday. Stephen Danish, the head of Immanuel Christian School, also confirmed the allegations were false.

Following an investigation by the Fairfax County Police Department, Danish said Amari Allen, the student who accused three of her classmates of assault, acknowledged the accusations were not true.

"While we are relieved to hear the truth and bring the events of the past few days to a close, we also feel tremendous pain for the victims and the hurt on both sides of this conflict," he said. "We recognize that we now enter what will be a long season of healing."

On the one hand, my gut reaction is that the punishment for lying and making something like this up should be as bad as the punishment the wrongly accused kids would have received. The problem is that could have effects we don’t factor...

*First, there’d be incentive to continue the lie and disincentive to come clean... and that could cause the wrongly accused more harm.

*Second, it could cause other people who actually have been victims to fear coming forward because they might (wrongly) fear punishment if they aren’t believed.

It’ll be interesting to see (if they publish It) ‘why’ the girl said these kids did that to her.

Is she just disturbed and looking for attention? Is she trying to get back at these kids for some other ‘wrong’? If the latter, is this alleged ‘wrong’ something serious or just normal kid stuff? Society has definitely taken the “no bully” movement pretty far. It’s horrible when a kid is seriously bullied... but kids can’t even play dodgeball in some schools because it’s “competitive” and is a “mask for bullying”. Ugh.

You don't think so? I think it's entirely possible that if she found a white man in what she thought was her apartment, she might have taken the time to ask who he was before shooting him.

I think whenever people on here disagree with me it is because I am Chinese. If I was white, they would probably take the time to consider my points of view slightly more carefully and probably agree with me quite often.

In the made-up school story, the girl said that when those boys cut off her hair one of the things they said to her was 'nappy' - which according to Google is a racist term used by some in America to refer to black people's hair. So in that story yes, it sounded like it was a factor (although possibly not the only factor). Although that story was fake anyway.

Whereas in the story about the guy being shot in his home, none of the stories say anything that suggest his ethnicity might have been a factor.

Largely it's only partially her fault as social media probably subjects her daily to the popular "white people are bad" justifications you see all over the place.

The more concerning issue is what you said. I see that same sentiment all the time whenever it comes out that some woman lied about a sexual assault accusation. Like, people generally believe if a person tries to ruin another's life they shouldn't face the consequences because then other liars might not recant their lie on the slight chance they'll grow a fucking conscience.

According to your post nothing in the school girl story suggested race was a factor... You googled Nappy and determined on your own you felt that was a race related term. I don't think you are applying the same standard here.

lol. I don't think anyone is saying that people who lie about being raped shouldn't be punished for the lie. I don't know about the US but in the UK you have all sorts of laws about perverting the cause of justice, wasting police time etc. that could be thrown at someone who is found to have invented a fictional crime.

In any case this whole discussion about the school girl is a total straw man. I said there was nothing in the home invasion story to suggest the shooter was motivated by ethnicity, and rather than discuss that point you have for some reason diverted the discussion towards the story about the school girl. Going back to the home invasion story: I said there is nothing in the story that suggests she was motivated by race, and given that you haven't actually disputed that at all I'm going to have to assume you agree with me?

Nappy isn't any more racist than curly or straight, is a descriptor.

She got convicted and is going to jail.

There is absolutely no way of knowing if this girl at school would have made up the same lie about black kids if it were black kids she had a bone to pick with. What is for certain is that a black girl making up a lie about black kids, never would have made national news. The same is true for this story about the officer walking into someone else's apartment and killing them. if it wasn't a white female officer, killing a black man in his own home, It almost certainly would not have been among the top stories for the past year.

You have to make similar assumptions in either story about someones state of mind and intent in order to make them about race.

Yes, you have to make a very big assumption because there is nothing at all in the chain of events reported that suggests the shooter would have treated a white man different in those same circumstances. The point here isn't about my personal assumptions about either story, I'm just suggesting if the OP calling the first story a "Hate Hoax", then the second story I presented must be a 'Hate Crime'. That or both stories really have little to do with race and the media hasn't shown any bias, and they are both just tragic stories of people making mistakes.

My personal feeling(and I provide this with no facts, just opinion) is that both stories have racial elements to them, but neither one is truly about race. The first is about a young girl who lied, the second is about a cop who shot a man in his own home.

I'm glad to hear you agree neither case is about race, perhaps I had mistakenly understood you felt the little girls case was about race.

My posts have mainly been directed towards the always inflammatory OP.

the difference is 1 actually happened -> the white cop walked into the wrong apartment and shot someone.. who just happened to be black.. the officer didn't chose for the victim to be black.. he just was..

the other was an intentional fabricated lie a black girl created involving 3 white kids..

she could have easily said 3 black kids, 3 Latino kids.. a mixed group of 1 white kid , a black kid & an Asian... or just not even mentioned race at all.. she could have said it was 2 Emo's & a Transgender... she was free to make up whatever she wanted too..

but she chose to say it was specifically 3 white kids.. making it about Race... & not about anything else
