Border influx poses political threat to Biden

https://www.msn.com/en-us/news/politics/border-influx-poses-political-threat-to-biden/ar-BB1eRQ40?ocid=mailsignout&li=BBnb7Kz

When President Joe Biden entered office, he listed what he called "four historic crises:" the coronavirus pandemic, the economy, a reckoning on race and climate change.

Not among them was a predicament that, two months into his presidency, now poses a potent political threat: the growing number of migrants and unaccompanied children showing up on the southern border and filling federal facilities many times over their capacity.
Republicans have seized on the influx -- which the White House has been reticent to label a "crisis" -- by arguing Biden's team was unprepared for migrants' reaction to his attempts to roll back former President Donald Trump's strict policies.

The Biden administration, meanwhile, has pointed fingers at Trump -- saying his administration exacerbated the situation by systematically ripping families apart, treating people fleeing violence and poverty with inhumanity, and neglecting or dismantling the system set up to deal with them.

"It is especially challenging and difficult now, because the entire system under United States law that has been in place throughout administrations of both parties was dismantled in its entirety by the Trump administration," Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas said on ABC's "This Week" Sunday. "So we are rebuilding the system as we address the needs of vulnerable children who arrive at

Biden has taken a slew of executive actions since taking office that have taken aim at Trump’s policies -- from kicking off wide-ranging reviews and halting the construction of the wall on the southern border to creating a task force aimed at reuniting migrant families separated under Trump.

He also proposed a bill that would provide a pathway to citizenship for 11 million undocumented immigrants in the United States, among other major reforms. And, unlike Trump, he has put more of a focus on addressing the root causes of migration from the Central American countries from which a large percentage of migrants come from, Honduras, Guatemala and El Salvador.

But the White House has over the past month increasingly found itself on the defensive as it balances its message that the border is "closed" with its stated desire to find safe places for the minors who keep crossing the border unaccompanied by their parents.

"Surges tend to respond to hope, and there was a significant hope for a more humane policy after four years of, you know, pent-up demand," the White House's coordinator for the southern border, Ambassador Roberta Jacobson, said earlier this month when a reporter asked her if it was a "coincidence" that the latest influx of people choosing to come to the United States started as Biden entered office.

"I don't know whether I would call that a coincidence," she said, "but I certainly think that the idea that a more humane policy would be in place may have driven people to make that decision."

MORE, from same article:
The Biden administration has kept the news media away from packed facilities along the U.S.-Mexico border -- the White House has promised "transparency" while repeatedly citing health and privacy concerns -- although it has allowed a series of members of Congress and senior government officials to see the conditions.

And in a departure from the Trump and Obama administrations, it has not allowed journalists to accompany U.S. Border Patrol officers on the job, preventing members of the media from speaking with migrants as they are taken into custody.

‘No end in sight’: Inside the Biden administration’s failure to contain the border surge

It seems to me that Biden and his Administration MISMANAGED the situation BADLY.

https://www.washingtonpost.com/politics/biden-border-surge/2021/03/20/21824e94-8818-11eb-8a8b-5cf82c3dffe4_story.html

Shortly before Christmas last year, Susan Rice and Jake Sullivan, two top advisers to President-elect Joe Biden, sat for an interview with EFE, a Spanish wire service, to issue a stark warning to migrants considering journeying north to the nation’s southern border: Don’t come now — but help is on the way.

The next day, Biden was similarly pointed, saying his administration — while eager to roll back Donald Trump’s immigration policies — first needed to implement “guardrails” to avoid winding up with “2 million people on our border.”

Less than a month later, the new president began tearing down some of the guardrails himself. He issued five immigration executive orders on Inauguration Day alone and promised an immigration policy far more humane and welcoming than that of his predecessor. His administration also began allowing unaccompanied minors into the country, a marked departure from the Trump administration’s approach.

Now, the Biden administration is scrambling to control the biggest surge in 20 years, with the nation on pace for as many as 2 million migrants at the southern border this year — the outcome Biden said he wanted to avoid.

Along with the existing struggle to combat the coronavirus, immigration has emerged as one of the administration’s most urgent challenges — seized on by Republicans as a political cudgel, posing risks to Democrats in the 2022 midterms and potentially undermining Biden’s governing agenda. The issue also threatens to overshadow the president’s recent political victories in passing a $1.9 trillion coronavirus relief package and making rapid strides in vaccination efforts.

The situation at the border — which Biden and his advisers steadfastly refuse to call a crisis — is the result of an administration that was forewarned of the coming surge, yet still ill-prepared and lacking the capacity to deal with it. Administration officials have been plagued by muddled messaging, sometimes making appeals that seem directed more at liberal activists than the migrants they need to dissuade from coming to the country.

The administration also took several steps — including saying it would allow unaccompanied minors into the country — that increased the flow of migrants and encouraged more to try their luck. There are now more than 10,000 unaccompanied migrant children in the care of the Department of Health and Human Services, and 5,000 more in the care of Customs and Border Protection, nearly twice the previous record, according to the latest figures obtained by The Washington Post.

“When you create a system that incentivizes people to come across, and they are released, that immediately sends a message to Central America that if you come across you can stay,” said Democratic Rep. Vicente Gonzalez, whose South Texas district sits near the border with Mexico. “It incentivizes droves of people to come, and the only way to slow it down is by changing policy at our doorstep. If they don’t change the policy, the flow of continued migration traffic isn’t going to stop or slow down.”

This is a very long article in the Washington Post that goes into details on the missteps of President Biden and his Admin. on this issue and how they created the crises at the Southern Border. It is rising to the level of AN INVASION.

More on the crises, with quotes from this article; I did skip a few parts.

https://www.aljazeera.com/news/2021/3/24/biden-names-harris-lead-effort-stem-migration-border

Biden names Harris to lead effort to stem migration at border
The Biden administration is struggling to respond to a growing number of migrants arriving at the US-Mexico border.

US President Joe Biden has named Vice President Kamala Harris to lead his administration’s efforts, along with Mexico and Central America’s Northern Triangle countries, to try to stem the flow of immigration to the United States.

It is a crisis that was created by the Biden administration, by their own policies,” Senator Ted Cruz told reporters at the US Capitol on Wednesday.

Cruz said he would be part of a group of 18 Senate Republicans visiting a US Customs and Border Protection (CBP) facility on Friday in Texas, where migrant children are being held in overflow detention cells.

Cruz and other Republican senators say that by dismantling former President Donald Trump’s tough border policies, the Biden administration has given new incentives to thousands of migrants trying to get into the US.

Biden administration officials, however, have blamed Trump for dismantling the US immigration system. The former president pursued hardline, anti-immigration policies that were widely criticised by migration advocates and rights groups.

NO matter who is blamed by whom, this is NOW President Biden's problem.

Biden created this mess by his Executive Orders to cancel Trump's policies regarding immigration. He wants to blame this huge flow and influx because of Trump, but it was his CHANGES that ENCOURAGED migrants to attempt to cross the border.

Biden's inactions make this situation worse:

Republicans to Biden, Harris: ‘Get some backbone’ and tour the border
By Aaron Feis April 7, 2021

Republican lawmakers on Wednesday challenged President Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris to “get some backbone” and tour the crisis at the US-Mexico border — following a review of their own that saw such troubling scenes as a detention center pod holding more than 15 times the child migrants for which it’s meant.

The GOP contingent slammed the Biden administration for enacting policy that has allowed tens of thousands of Central American migrants to flock to the border in recent months, while waving off calls for Biden or Harris to travel to the border to face the fallout.

“Whether you’re American or Mexican or Guatemalan, it doesn’t matter,” said Rep. Burgess Owens (R-Utah) during a briefing in Edinburg, Tex. “These are our children. And we have an administration that does not have the backbone to come down here and give encouragement to these great men and women [of US Border Patrol] who are doing the job and are being overwhelmed right now.

Harris Speaks Out On Why She Hasn’t Traveled To Southern Border
67,164 views•Jun 8, 2021

Vice President Kamala Harris tries to deflect the (rightful) criticism that she has not yet been to the US-Mexico border by saying "And I haven't been to Europe."
(See the story below.)

She also deflected question about losing the support of Sen. Joe Manchin of West Virginia to support the Democrats attempts to "reform" or hijack US elections. I am not sure that is in this video clip, but saw that on the News report last night. About the only leadership she shows is her "skill" to avoid answering a question.

https://www.usatoday.com/story/news/politics/2021/06/08/kamala-harris-lester-holt-interview-pushes-back-border-criticism/7600802002/

WASHINGTON – Vice President Kamala Harris pushed back against criticisms she's received for not visiting the U.S.-Mexico border as she leads the White House's efforts to address a surge of migration to the U.S.

During an interview with NBC News that aired Tuesday, host Lester Holt cited criticism of her decision not to go to the border and asked whether she has plans to visit.

"At some point, you know, we are going to the border," she said. "We've been to the border. So this whole thing about the border. We've been to the border. We've been to the border."

"You haven't been to the border," Holt noted.

"And I haven't been to Europe," the vice president responded. "And I mean, I don't, understand the point that you're making. I'm not discounting the importance of the border."

Lady, the President did not put you in charge of foreign policy in Europe, so what point are you making here? That you are neglecting your leadership role? And it took you THIS long to even make a visit to address this issue? How long will we wait for actions to address the IMMEDIATE crisis at the border.

Some lawmakers have criticized President Joe Biden and Harris for not visiting the U.S.-Mexico border. Many Republican lawmakers have called out Harris in particular given her role of addressing the root causes. Harris, however, has said that she is strictly focused on root causes of migration and not the situation at the border. Rep. Henry Cuellar, a Democrat who represents parts of the border in Texas, has also been critical of Harris and Biden for not visiting the border.

NBC’s Lester Holt Grills Kamala Harris on Migrant Crisis: ‘You Haven’t Been to the Border’
‘WE’VE BEEN’
The veep attempted to wave off Holt’s question with a laugh, noting that she also hasn’t been to Europe lately.

Harris lost control of her message. Americans got to see Guatemala flexing common sense instead of begging for Millions.

The Biden-Harris teamed missed the mark and showed their incompetence in Europe, I mean Guatemala. :D

And there are BILLIONS supposedly on its way to help them build their country. It was not clear, but I think these are supposed to be economic INVESTMENTS by large US Corporations.

I am not sure which country, but some or many of those Central America are FULL of corruption by Govt siphoning money meant to really intended to help the poor. There is a small rich upper class who do not share with the masses, and almost NO middle class in some or most of those countries. I hope addressing the "root cause" will help, but these problems seem to me MONUMENTAL and intractable.

Yeah, they are certainly big problems and won't be fixed overnight. Still, one must make the attempt. One thing is sure. If one doesn't start sometime, the problems will never be fixed.

More than a dozen states from Georgia to Michigan to New York will have some kind of scattered cicada appearance, with especially big concentrations around Washington, D.C.; Maryland; Pennsylvania; Ohio; and Indiana.

Yes, doing something to address the root cause of migration north to the USA can help EVENTUALLY. In the meantime, the Actions and Words of President Biden encourages more illegal immigration to the USA. Open the door (or Wall) a crack and a flood attempts to rush in to escape corruptions, poverty, and violence in these countries.

Question: do Guatemala, Honduras, and El Salvador qualify officially as "Shithole Countries"?

WASHINGTON (AP) — In bluntly vulgar language, President Donald Trump questioned Thursday why the U.S. would accept more immigrants from Haiti and “shithole countries” in Africa rather than places like Norway, as he rejected a bipartisan immigration deal, according to people briefed on the extraordinary Oval Office conversation.

https://apnews.com/article/immigration-north-america-donald-trump-ap-top-news-international-news-fdda2ff0b877416c8ae1c1a77a3cc425

Trump’s comments came as two senators presented details of a bipartisan compromise that would extend protections against deportation for hundreds of thousands of young immigrants — and also strengthen border protections, as Trump has insisted.

The lawmakers had hoped Trump would back their accord, an agreement among six senators evenly split among Republicans and Democrats, ending a months-long, bitter dispute over protecting the “Dreamers.” But the White House later rejected it, plunging the issue back into uncertainty just eight days before a deadline that threatens a government shutdown.

Dick Durbin of Illinois, the Senate’ s No. 2 Democrat, explained that as part of that deal, a lottery for visas that has benefited people from Africa and other nations would be ended, the sources said, though there could be another way for them to apply. Durbin said people would be allowed to stay in the U.S. who fled here after disasters hit their homes in places including El Salvador, Guatemala and Haiti.

As I posted earlier, this crises at the U.S.-Mexican Border is CAUSED by the Biden Administration. They have opened the door a bit more that President Trump tried to close.

from the above source:

Hannity Exclusive: Guatemalan president chides Biden administration for mixed messaging
Lukewarm messages only create opportunity to misinterpret, warns Guatemala's president

In a "Hannity" exclusive, investigative journalist Sara Carter sat down with Guatemalan President Alejandro Giammattei to discuss Vice President Kamala Harris' summit with him, as well as the state of the U.S. border crisis and how it is also affecting Guatemala.

Carter, a Fox News contributor, spoke with Giammattei shortly after Harris departed for Mexico; following what both liberal and conservative critics called a disastrous visit to the northern triangle by the California Democrat.

Giammattei told Carter that people are leaving Guatemala and being taken advantage of by the ruthless cartels and human trafficking "coyotes", in part because of mixed messaging from the United States.

"He pushed back against the Biden administration… He said this border crisis is one of your own making. Don't put the blame on us," Carter recalled.

Giammattei said the U.S. should be clearer in its messaging, and that humanitarian messages have routinely been "distorted" by coyotes to flood the border with unaccompanied minors – and benefit financially in the process.

"What they said [in the US] is that they will promote family unification – so the coyotes took the children and teenagers to the U.S., and the order was full, not only with people from Guatemala."

"[That] is why our proposal is that messages should be clear," he continued, adding that Harris was firm in her "do not come" message given while speaking to reporters there.

"But if you have a lukewarm message, it only creates the opportunity to misinterpret," he cautioned.

Speaking with host Sean Hannity, Carter added that Giammattei wants bilateral cooperation with the U.S. that includes stronger federal charges against traffickers and coyotes. He said he is willing to institute that at home while in concert with Washington.

Problems at the US Southern border continue under MORE BAD MANAGEMENT by the Biden Team. At least they are sending some illegal immigrants back home.

NOTE the quote about the Migrant Protection Protocols. Biden's policies and statements many from DAY ONE of his Administration, have been interpreted by illegal immigrants and "Coyotes" to send HUNDREDS of THOUSANDS to the border in hopes of getting into the USA.

https://www.texastribune.org/2021/09/18/texas-immigration-border-deportations/

Biden administration speeds up deportation flights for Haitians in growing Texas migrant camp
The situation in Del Rio spiraled this week as more than 15,000 migrants, many of them from Haiti, arrived at the border in recent days, settling in a makeshift camp as they waited for CBP agents to process their petitions to stay in the U.S.

DEL RIO — The Biden administration said Saturday it was accelerating deportation flights and sending 400 federal agents to Del Rio to seize control of an escalating crisis as thousands of mostly Haitian immigrants continued streaming to the Texas city’s border, camping out in squalid conditions under its international bridge.

Customs and Border Protection temporarily shuttered its ports of entry there late Friday and re-routed international traffic 57 miles east to the nearby city of Eagle Pass, a move local officials worried could cost millions in trade losses if the closure lasts.

CBP is coordinating with Immigration and Customs Enforcement and the U.S. Coast Guard to move migrants from Del Rio to other processing locations, Department of Homeland Security officials said in the statement Saturday. About 2,000 had already been transferred, but overnight the camp grew to more than 14,600 migrants — the most Val Verde County has ever seen at once, local officials said. DHS said it was securing extra transportation to expedite deportation flights to Haiti and other countries in the next 72 hours.

U.S. Rep. Tony Gonzales, a San Antonio Republican whose south Texas border district includes Del Rio, said the Biden administration’s processing of 2,000 migrants in 24 hours was a remarkable feat and praised its decision to speed up expulsion flights. He said as many as 10 flights from Del Rio were planned for the next week.

But he urged the White House to rapidly re-implement a controversial Trump-era policy known as “Remain in Mexico,” or the Migrant Protection Protocols, that forced migrants to wait in Mexico while they pursued their asylum cases in the U.S. Biden had rescinded the policy, but a string of recent court rulings have ordered the administration to implement it once more.

“The sooner the administration can reinstall the ‘Remain in Mexico’ policy, that will help alleviate some of that stress in Del Rio, and I think the administration is going to have no choice,” Gonzales said.

The Del Rio sector, which spans 47 mostly rural counties, is the second-busiest CBP sector. Nearly 215,000 migrants have been apprehended there since October, and Val Verde County was the first to start prosecuting migrants for criminal trespassing under a state deterrence initiative Abbott started this summer.

Lozano did not immediately return a call seeking comment Saturday but told the Washington Post that the situation was “no longer sustainable or acceptable.”

“We now have [the equivalent of] one-third of the population of the city of Del Rio, Texas, in a confined space under the international bridge,” he said. “I had thought the alarm was set on Monday but this is a nuclear bomb alarm.”

Everybody knows the right-wingers love their whimsically-named "Migrant Protection Protocols." You don't need to remind us.

The trouble is, the "Migrant Protection Protocols" are anything but that. It's a bit of doublespeak worthy of the KGB. Migrants sent to Mexico or other countries are stored in some of the most dangerous regions in the world, areas of Mexico so lawless that the State Department classes them as Level DO NOT TRAVEL areas. U.S. internment camps might not be the most pleasant places in the world, but they're a hell of a lot safer than being dumped on the street in Matamoros.

The "Migrant Protection Protocols" are a blatant violation of both the letter and spirit of international law. The 1951 Convention Relating to the Status of Refugees, which the U.S. is a signatory to and was one of the primary drivers of, clearly prohibits sending migrants to places where they need to fear for their lives. Violating this Convention is seen as yet another example of the U.S. violating international law just because it can.

From time immemorial, refugees fleeing from wars, pestilence, and tyranny have fled to other places, and civilized nations have granted them asylum.

What you call "bad management" by the Biden team, I would call "shouldering your responsibilities as a human being, even if they are inconvenient."

The principles of asylum are deeply embedded in Judaeo-Christian teachings, which you claim to profess. It rings out in Exodus 23:9 and Deuteronomy 10:19 and 27:19, and above all in Matthew 25.
