Leaders' debate

Postby Dukasaur on Sat Sep 11, 2021 2:31 am

Listened to the federal debate last night. It was probably the best debate format I've ever seen, and it led to probably the best debate I've listened to in my entire life. All five leaders were in top form, all five are excellent speakers, and it really was a delight. Lively and aggressive without being acrimonious.

Anybody else watch/listen to the debate? Did you enjoy it?

The Tories are officially known as the Conservatives and they are the front-runners in this election.

Duk, you realize that the Media in the USA basically IGNORE politics in Canada, and the rest of the world, too. RIGHT?

Most politics is local, and politics outside the USA is not of much interest to most Americans (those of us who live in the USA, that is).

But, I wish sincerely that we in the USA had more civil political discourse. Most of current political rhetoric consists of of members from two sides YELLING at each other, many seeking a sound bite to be on the News or an internet post. People yell and neither side listens and there is NO civil political discourse or debate. This is a terrible way to engage in politics.

For many reasons, the USA has never had a viable third party in politics. Does anyone remember the Whigs?

I am neglecting getting too caught up in the leaders of the parties.

Thanks for the links though, I will watch the recap, possibly skim the long version if I get a chance.

I would like to get more farmiliar with the all the local candidates I actually get to choose from. Though I feel like my vote won't count. The conservatives basically own my riding. This cycle I am ok with that federally.

Sadly I am considering voting conservative partially in support of the typical, "Truedough must go." concept. Fortunately our MP is pretty good and worthy of my vote, currently I am choosing between him and <gasp> a lady who is running.

As I say, I need to look into things a bit more, there are at least two more candidates I am having difficulty getting good information from about their public political claims.

I suspect he does. Further the US media overwhelms much of the news and conversations in Canada also.

People who don't even know the candidates they should be voting for here soon will have strong opinions on Trump versus Biden. I believe he may have been concerned I could be one when I was sort of asking about US Republican Party leadership here recently.

Maxime was not invited to the debate because he didn't have 4% support in pre-election polls. That's the official cutoff point for debate invitations. Although, he has risen in support since the election was called. He was at 5% the night before the debate, so if the invitation status was calculated last-minute, he would have qualified.

Although, I suspect they would have dredged up some bogus excuse to not invite him anyway. The status quo really dislikes Maxime.

No, NOT basically republicans.... Conservatives.

I agree America NEEDS to viable multiparty system though the two parties in control will NEVER allow it so don't hold your breath.

THIS IS A NON PARTISAN JOKE THAT CAN BE ENJOYED BY All PARTIES!

NOT ONLY THAT - IT IS POLITICALLY CORRECT!

While walking down the street one day a "Member of Parliament" is tragically hit by a truck and dies.

His soul arrives in heaven and is met by St. Peter at the entrance.

'Welcome to heaven,' says St. Peter.

'Before you settle in, it seems there is a problem. We seldom see a high official around these parts, you see, so we're not sure what to do with you.'

'No problem, just let me in,' says the man.

'Well, I'd like to, but I have orders from higher up. What we'll do is have you spend one day in hell and one in heaven. Then you can choose where to spend eternity.

'Really, I've made up my mind. I want to be in heaven,' says the MP.

'I'm sorry, but we have our rules.'

And with that, St. Peter escorts him to the elevator and he goes down, down, down to hell. The doors open and he finds himself in the middle of a green golf course. In the distance is a clubhouse and standing in front of it are all his friends and other politicians who had worked with him.

Everyone is very happy and in evening dress. They run to greet him, shake his hand, and reminisce about the good times they had while getting rich at the expense of the people.

They play a friendly game of golf and then dine on lobster, caviar and champagne.

Also present is the devil, who really is a very friendly & nice guy who has a good time dancing and telling jokes. They are having such a good time that before he realizes it, it is time to go.

Everyone gives him a hearty farewell and waves while the elevator rises ....

The elevator goes up, up, up and the door reopens on heaven where St. Peter is waiting for him.

'Now it's time to visit heaven.'

So, 24 hours pass with the MP joining a group of contented souls moving from cloud to cloud, playing the harp and singing. They have a good time and, before he realizes it, the 24 hours have gone by and St. Peter returns.

'Well, then, you've spent a day in hell and another in heaven. Now choose your eternity.'

The MP reflects for a minute, then he answers: 'Well, I would never have said it before, I mean heaven has been delightful, but I think I would be better off in hell.'

So St. Peter escorts him to the elevator and he goes down, down, down to hell.

Now the doors of the elevator open and he's in the middle of a barren land covered with waste and garbage.

He sees all his friends, dressed in rags, picking up the trash and putting it in black bags as more trash falls from above.

The devil comes over to him and puts his arm around his shoulder. ' I don't understand,' stammers the MP.

'Yesterday I was here and there was a golf course and clubhouse, and we ate lobster and caviar, drank champagne, and danced and had a great time. Now there's just a wasteland full of garbage and my friends look miserable. What happened? '

The devil looks at him, smiles and says, ' Yesterday we were campaigning .... Today you voted.'
