Cultural Appropriation?

Musical “artist” A$AP Rocky decided to wear this outfit to the Met Gala this year.

I am curious why he’s allowed to culturally appropriate clothing from my Celtic Heritage.

I am pretty sure if a “white” dude (whatever that term “white” means) wore a Native American inspired headdress he would be excoriated by the press. Am I wrong? Why can he were a Celtic inspired kilt-like outfit and he gets celebrated?

So now you've dropped the Irish thing in favour of some sort of pan-Celticism?

Is that even an actual clan tartan, or just a tartan pattern?

Irish and Scottish have both traditionally worn Kilts.

My family hails from Ireland, but many (off the boat Irish included) have thought my surname was Scottish. So it’s highly probably that my forefathers came from Scotland or migrated back and forth between the two. There was much exchange between these two areas.

So claiming “Celtic” as my heritage is not unreasonable.

I assume it’s just a pattern, and the material is different.

Doesn’t mean it’s NOT appropriation… one could make a native American looking headdress from fake feathers and it would still be considered in appropriate.

looool kilts aren't a cultural thing, it's tartan (Scottish) that has cultural significance. I'm surprised you didn't know that, given your close ties to the culture (e.g. someone once told you that your name might originate from Scotland).

Next you'll be complaining about Indian people wearing blue jeans.

Jeans should only be worn by Americans, North and South Americans are both fine…. and maybe Australia/New Zealand.
Anyone else wearing them is absolutely cultural appropriation.

(but I of course subscribe to the “yeah but cultural appropriation means nothing really” idea…)

I don't want to hear from a Chinese obese trangender who hates Japanese. Only WHITE people have the right to be racist. Suck it rest of the world.

I’m still exaggerating.

There’s NO SUCH THING as cultural appropriation.

It’s a meaningless concept.

My whole point is that IF you think cultural appropriation is “wrong” and white people shouldn’t be rappers, or where native american headdresses… then you MUST also get mad at A$AP Rocky for wearing a kilt. Most libs will get mad when white people culturally appropriate stuff… but not when “white culture” is appropriated.

Do you not have sarcasm in the UK?

I know sarcasm is typically associated with Americans, but we’re OK if you culturally appropriate a sense of humor from us.

Ralf might’ve gone to Oxford to sweep the floors or mow the lawn.

Do you say this because you assume that ralph is an immigrant or that he is not capable of getting admitted to that institution?

Now that jim has embraced his newfound Scottishness he looks down on the Irish as his inferiors. Sad that he chooses to build walls instead of bridges, especially given the literal bridge that used to exist between Ireland and Scotland.

I was unable to find a video clip of Jed or Ellie May, explaining how Jethro was the most educated of the family, since he went to school at Oxford.

I was embracing my Celtic Heritage… you called it “Pan Celtic”.

You’re not keeping up.

Claiming Scottish tartan as your heritage because you have Irish ancestors is like claiming sushi because your grandad was from China.

Yawn.

Kilts are shared by both Irish and Scots… hence Celtic.

Keep trying.

… also missing the whole point of the thread.

ralph again shows that he really does not understand Irish History and Celts.

ralph TRIES to appropriate the Irish Culture and FAILS AGAIN. That is NO surprise for me.

Celtic nations
Ireland (Éire)
Scotland (Alba)
Wales (Cymru)
Brittany (Breizh)
Cornwall (Kernow)
Isle of Man (Mannin)

This is such an American thing, where you have an ancestor born in X country 150 years ago so now you're X and entitled to all that entails. Other New Worlders I don't think do this. I don't think they do this in Chile or Argentina.

This is largely a way to reconcile ethnicity while still sobbing at the fate of the Native Americans. Many people are unable to identify as American because they don't want to claim right of conquest or acknowledge that the Indians have been effectively exterminated and the remnant tribes are just museum displays composed of 70% genetically European actors.

My dad took a DNA test a few years back and it showed he was of a Thracian cohort that migrated to Britain around the time of the Roman conquest 2000 or whatever years ago. At no point since then have I felt any affinity to Greece. Nor have I ever felt affinity to England from which I'm only 350 years removed.

That said, the Irish government plays into this big time and has spent decades feeding these fantasies to Americans to cash in on all the tourist money that results. That's the only way you could get people to proudly assert themselves as being from an island of sexually repressed drunks (Ireland) instead of the greatest empire since Rome (USA). The UK does it on a different, cleverer, level to harness American sentimentality for military purposes.

It really is maximum irony that you have Americans like jim and jp4 who spend their who lives playing dress up as a fake Irish person but then create threads like this complaining about how a black guy once wore a kilt.

ralph again shows that he know LITTLE to nothing about me, or much else.
