3 on 3 Basketball Competition

So I've just been thinking about how we could take various sports, and turn the "game" itself into a tournament, rather than just the league structure... And I thought of 3-on-3 basketball...

Here's my thoughts...

People set themselves up in teams of 3. (if people create their own teams they are more likely to be true to one another, and also show up for all games) [although for now, just post if you're interested, we can make up teams later, or you can find a couple of friends to play with you, lets just get a baseline level of interest first]

A round robin league structure is set up for the first rounds, until every team has played every other team. Then points are sorted out, the top 8 teams are taken into a finals round as seen in many other sporting competitions. Fairly standard so far..

Here's my twist for the idea.... Instead of these games being triples, they are 6 player terminator games. So no sharing armies between teammates. (I can't give you my shooting arm damnit, I need that) but of course, you don't want to eliminate your teammates. Players can join in any order (representing the tipoff, in fact, there might be some strategy to the order you want to join? who knows...) Also games will be freestyle, to represent the flowing nature of the game of basketball. (I know this might alienate some people, but I think it's only logical if we're going to make the match like a game of basketball)

Thinking further, and this will require some help in organising and watching, cause it's going to take a lot of work... Every opposition territory taken is worth 2 points. Every teammate territory taken is worth 1 point. Every elimination is worth 3 points. At the end of the match, scores are totalled and a winner is declared. It might not be the team who is left standing, if the other team took more territory...

How about at the end of each turn, each player has to report on how many points they scored for their side, and the running total so far, in game chat. That will make things much easier.

What do people think? I would need a number of volunteers to help run this tournament, to be "referees" as it were, or watchers of the games to count points (although all points could be back-calculated from the game log) If you would like to volunteer to help run this, send me a pm, if I get enough responses, I'll organise it.

Actually, I suppose people could tally their own points in each game, and declare the results in the topic list, I'd then have to just check them, or the oppositions could confirm them...

I want a couple of spots at the top of this thread if this gets underway for reporting of info.

The idea is very interesting, I will give you that. However, I have no idea how you would efficiently record all of that information. It would literally take hours just to record a few games I think.

I thought about that, but I've come up with an idea, in that each team has a captain, and it is the two captains jobs to keep track of the running score in game chat. All each player has to do at the end of each turn is count up the territories they took that turn, and say "I scored x, which makes our teams score (y + x)". It's up to the other team to check they are right, and at the end of each game, the final scores get posted in the forum.

I record the final scores in a ladder, and we go from there. By spreading the work load out, it's reduced to a manageable level. Many hands make light work and all that.
