Our TV doesn't cover GB. All I know is that they won a bike race, an that they aren't in the top 5 for medal count. How are they doing? And what's their events?

ACTUALLY, we are third in the medal table, we have the highest ever medal count in....sumin, and a female swimmer, becky adlington i think shes called, broke two world records and got 2 golds.

I can still remember... when I posted that it went:
1) USA
2) China
3) Australia
4) France
5) Russian Fed.
Bob Costas give us the count like every four hours

Good for you guys though! I wonder if GB was like 6th place and waiting for their events or something.... Does GB and France still have an olympic rivalry? Also, if you guys could take China down the USA would appreciate it.... :D

What a strange medals table you all use. So, a country with 20 bronze medals, rates higher than a country with 19 Gold (a theoretical example) ?

In a list of the total medal count? I think so yeah. It wasn't a who is better than who list.

Isn't that the medal table equivelant of "Hiding the ugly singing kid in the back" ?

sammy lad, she got 1 WR and 2 Golds. still brilliant though.

we're hanging on to 3rd in the medals table, 18 Golds. Russia has 17.

the medals table has always shown the Country with the most Golds top.

Huck, think it's called manipulation. USA is that use to being top with most Golds, they had to think of something quickly to keep the sponsors happy.

I'm not sure why you guys are so bitter about this. It was a medal count (total medals).

But since someone mentioned it, I decided to put point values on the medals. 3 for Gold, 2 for Silver, and 1 for Bronze. The points come out to this:

China: 200
USA: 200
GB: 91

that does not hide the fact that USA manipulated the table so they could assume to be top. it's alright, if it keeps the money rolling in from the sponsors and Joe public don't really get it. USA USA USA.

Get over it. There is no "official table". There is no "official competition" to see which country can get the most of anything.

Oh it's mostly that counting total medals is in fact only done by the Americans. Every other country only looks at the gold medals, as they show the winners. It's just silly to rate them any other way.

Actually there is an official table.... It's ordered by Golds.

I'm guessing this is the one you are talking about, right?

http://results.beijing2008.cn/WRM/ENG/INF/GL/95A/GL0000000.shtml

Did you see the far right side? Even this one has ranking by totals.

“ The International Olympic Committee (IOC) does not recognise global ranking per country; the medal tables are displayed for information only. Furthermore, the results that we publish are official and are taken from the "Official Report" - a document published for each Olympic Games by the Organising Committee. However, for the first Olympic Games (until Antwerp in 1920), it is difficult to give the exact number of medals awarded to some countries, due to the fact that teams were composed of athletes from different countries. The medal tables by country are based on the number of medals won, with gold medals taking priority over silver and bronze. A team victory counts as one medal. ”
—International Olympic Committee[6]

Thus, there is no official rankings because the IOC does not recognize any.

I mean the IOC table, Beijing isn't on there so I assume they're released afterwards.

Duh, it's not in the spirit of the Olympics to do that. But to everyone else there is a winner.

I would say that if there was a rating system the fairest would be the one mentioned earlier in this thread (I can't remember who said it) which would leave it as gold = 3 points; silver =2; and bronze =1.

I would agree. Or some sort of similar scale.

I don't like how we (the USA) goes by total medals, and I don't like how other countries go by gold medals.

But then again, there are times where I wish I could have as much pride as some of these small countries who make national events out of their sole participant finishing in the top 3 in one event for the first time ever. The amount of celebration I've seen in some instances is amazing.

It's how I do it. If there is noone from my country in the event I just cheer on for the cheer fun. Watching the 100m or 200m events was amazing. Seeing Usain Bolt in a sprint is awesome, no matter what country you're from.

I think it's been a fantastic olympics.
I haven't seen as much as I would have liked, but highlights for me were Rebecca Adlington getting her 2 gold in the pool and a world record; the mens four rowing team overtaking the Aussies with just 200m to go where pure determination, (or was it perfect timing) got them that gold; Elena Isinbayeva raising the bar to a record 5.05m and clearing it on her 3rd attempt - amazing! Not forgetting Phelps, of course, and those....what is it, 8 medals?

As for the possible cheating...par for the course isn't it? (in one form or another). When has there been an olympics without it?

Great result for GB - just shows you what a bit of money can do.
Good old John Major. :D

I would agree. though I would also point out Bolt from Jamaica, The US beach volley ball teams, Rebecca Soni, Japan defeating the US softball team (see it can be done), and many other memorable events.

He is amazing and speedy, but have you noticed how arrogant he is?
sure he is the best runner, in 200 and 100, 2 golds, world records, and see what he says.
He's like
"I'm so proud of myself." I haven't personally heard him say something about his country, just him.
Look at phelps, 8 golds, 7 WR's, doesn't even act out of the ordinary except in the relays after wining gold.
and i wouldnt be surprised if bolt trained in the USA just like 80% of all the other athletes.
