Unlike freestyle, sequential games lead to lots of stalemates in flat or no spoil games on simple maps. freestyle gives the winner an opening to close games with no round limits.

The answer to the question is simple,:

Because the people paid to work n this web site are too busy having lunch, or tea, to be bothered to fix the missed-turn-double-turn-cheat problem !!!

Do your job ffs !!!!!

It isn't hard !!!

There used to be a much bigger fs bug where if you didnt end your turn you got to go first again. I dont think what you are referring to is a problem in speed games because each player can be attentive for the entire game.

In response to the initial question there are multiple reasons why FS is an fraternity that few join.

1) The first freestyle game leads to a bad taste in the mouth of new players. We have all experienced getting crushed in our first freestyle speed game and while some of us move past that a lot of others dont like the settings and avoid learning.

2) It takes a lot of games to learn to be good at freestyle and most people don't play as actively as the average freestyle player.

3) People like gabriel foe them before they ever have the chance. I have made the argument multiple times that noobs in 6-8 man escalating are good for the better players. Sure they noob you sometimes but you learn how to avoid it and reason with them to not kill you for no reason. Then on top of that when they dont noob you you have the option to take advantage of them noobing someone else. Every good fs player has been involved int he game where every player was good and it goes stale on the classic map. When you get foed and yelled at for making a bad play why bother to learn. We would be better to teach and befriend players so that they can become better.

4) Clickies - I actually think the site clickies are bad for freestyle. It used to be extremely easy for players to realize that others were moving faster than they ever could with the drop downs, and would often prompt questions. As a fs player you could then direct them to clickies. Maybe im the only one but i dont think you can ever move as fast on the site clickies as the real ones, and now it is ever harder for players to learn about the add on clickies.

I dont think internet is of huge importance, its all about thinking fast and learning to expect what is going to happen in advance. Sure an awful internet prevents you from joining games, but most people dont have it that bad.

I personally would love to see more freestyle players out there, but we have to realize that if people are to learn we need to help teach them and encourage them to play. Give them a few pointers and a starting place on a easy map/settings to get good at and then avoid joining the games so they can learn. Once people get hooked on those games bring them into the harder games like 6-8 player escalating when they will already like freestyle and think they can learn instead of thinking they can never win.

I can't speak for anyone else, but for my part...freestyle simply isn't as fascinating for me.

For me, it's all about being able to study the game and then make what I believe to be the best move. Like chess, which I love. Heck, even in my RPG-type games, I don't prefer first-person-shooters or games where the combat can't be paused. I want to be able to pause the combat, think through my moves and make the changes I think are necessary. I like that opportunity to think things through.

So that's why I've never been interested in freestyle. Freestyle is for the ADHD players, not the AD&D players. <laughing>

seriously though... I take your point.. and there's something to be said for examining your play, seeing consequences, planning routes, thinking multiple turns ahead (in reference to your chess analogy)...

and this thread was never meant to be a "bash seq" diatribe... I was simply trying to get a handle on how we could encourage more fs players, as I find it to be the most interactive/exciting gameplay available...

I think ljex said it pretty well, and I echo many of those sentiments....

stalemates are very common in fs games where there is a preponderance of top fs players.... noobs eliminate many stalemates, which is the reason I don't foe noobs who play in the fs games I play in... I curse the hell outta them, but I don't foe them....

exactly, I used the foe the people who foed noobs so that games would actually fill. Without noobs the game isnt as exciting, its more about planning and less about reacting/anticipating. While i don't oppose sequential as a slower pace more thought provoking game style, nothing is as fun as freestyle where anything can happen and at any second you can go from winning to eliminated/losing.

To me 8 man freestyle escalating classic speed has no equal because every game is different and as long as you have troops and cards you can always come back with a stolen kill. We all have our favorites and everyone is entitled to enjoy the game style they enjoy.

I agree with all of this, except the bit about the site's clickies. The add-on definitely gives you a small advantage at the highest levels, but the site clickies let you play on an almost level playing field if you don't (or can't, like me cos I play at work) get the add-on, which I think probably increases the number of people who are likely to play. I know that I probably wouldn't play nearly as much freestyle without that option, and I can hold my own in speed fs at the highest levels.

The bit about foeing can't be said often enough or loud enough. People really need to stop foeing noobs on these games. It's a satisfying thing to do after someone's suicided into you, but it's made it so hard to get the games filled. It's a good argument as well for bringing back 8p classic speed fs, instead of 6p doodle. In the classic games, you can see the suicide coming easier (ruh-roh the noob and I dropped in Oz!), and it's less likely to be a game killer than it is in doodle where getting noobed once is likely to rule you out of the win.

I have a bit of a gripe about the site clickies I will admit but i think they are clunky and non natural like the add-on clickies. Not to mention the extra features the add on clickies give you like auto advance.

The reason for this gripe is simple, at the time site clickies were in the works Lack asked for feedback in a thread and while i gave mine with both a freestyle and standard perspective he chose to not use something similar to the add-on that so many used and loved and made something that many think is harder to use (evidence by the more frequent switching of right/left clicks). I never understood why ask advice if you wont listen to the answer and it has stuck with me years later.

more to the point, and shockingly (for me) on topic...

site clicks blow... not just because I'm used to the add-on, but as ljex effectively points out, they are objectively not as efficient...

I guess if pressed I wouldn't say it's what holds noobs back from taking up freestyle, but it sure doesn't help either...

No it doesnt stop them, it just makes it harder for players to recognize that others have higher end capabilities and fix it for future games
