3.ZZtop= i grew up on this music and liked it ever since
4.AC/DC=i like there use of rythem in thier songs

no. they define what the marketers wanted the consuming public to think punk was you idiot. bands at the time with a real message like Crass define what punk is and was. bands like the clash and pistols (and the people making money off them like mcclaren and the record companies) help make punk a fashion. they killed it the same way hippie was killed off. they were in it for the money.

i've heard just about everything by the clash. try backing up your points. i'm not saying they weren't an influential band(so was freegin Rush) but that doesn't change the fact that they sold out. and when they sold out they ceased to be punk. they just became another rock band. they're safe, easily aproachable and not particularly political. perfect for little kids and house wives. a lot like green day actually.

They evolved into something far better than three chord bollocks that most of the punks were churning out. The songs had meaning, were multi layered, and far beyond punk.

Although I like The Clash, and their early work was awesome, I'm going to have to side with mybike_yourface

Did anyone even hear Cut The Crap (they shoulda taken their own advice) - The fact is The Clash by the end of it were very much rock n roll and everything that sucks about music. Joe Strummer and Mick Jones weren't talking at all, but yet continued to be in a band together. Why? Maybe because it had turned into a comfortable 'job' that paid the electricity bills plus more - And don't even get me started on Sex Pistols, they were and always will be a joke.

If you want the 'epitome' of punk, you would have to look at bands that actually stayed underground, with Crass being a perfect example. Unfortunately, with all subcultures, once mainstream commercialisation finds a way to make a dollar from something, they will, and stupid kids just eat it up while still having the false sense of being 'alternative' (today that manifest in bands such as Green Day, AFI, My Chemical Shitbags, etc)

Like i mentioned earlier in this thread, if it's on the radio, it sucks

like i said, when the bassist died and they sold out and made the black album(which had enter sandman on it) yeah. i feel a little different about them since it's they weren't punk, but i definately think they sold out hard at that point.

I like Metallica all around. Sure, the earlier albums have great work on them, but just because the Black Album was a bit of a change in style doesn't make it a sell-out. Enter Sandman's a great song (albeit an overplayed great song), and it isn't really reminiscent of the old stuff.

All time best Metallica song ever is For Whom the Bell Tolls, IMO. Killer intro, awesome lyrics... just an all-around cool song.

Though the bell just sounds wimpy compared to the AC/DC bell in Hells Bells :P
