I really think you need to deflate your head. You've been commenting in the foundry for 1 month.

And I just looked at the first pages of this thread, and I think the graphics have gone way downhill since the first image. It is now a hell of a lot more cluttered. Do you want to take credit for making the map look worse as well samus?

LOL, I think you're taking my comments too personally, but I guess you're entitled to your opinion and my honest response.

I don't take credit for any graphics. I think they're a lot better, and judging by the comments throughout the thread and the shift in the poll numbers, most other people agree. I made occasional comments but I was a lot more involved with the development of the gameplay. Cairnswk deserves all the credit for the visuals, he did all the work and came up with most of the ideas himself.

I have said before, graphics are not my department, I yield to the many people here who can better assist that part of a map. I will never take credit for any part of the graphics of a map.

Woohoo...feedback's working....the troops are taking up battle arms....must be full-moon fever!

Thank you all for your feedback. I find it interesting. :)

Please continue your discussion on the bonuses as I am not an expert in this area.

Below is the new version, a compromise if you like....
* Removal of Tableland Rises
* Removal of waterfalls
* Opening up of the mid section to attack Agate Hills from Fruit Pickers which I wanted in the first version
* Change to bonus 3 on Agate Hills ( does this need upping)
* Removal of moutains at Atherton - Tolga Heights

Appreciate your comments on the moutains and how they 'challenge' the bonus situation and attacking the coastline. I'm afraid however, the mountain configuration will remain along the coastline.

To alleviate this situation of this coastline being easy to hold, perhaps the placement of an airport on the territories of Innisfail, Cairns, Port Douglas, Atherton and Mareeba (since these are the only real airports in the area), would assist attacking these territories and making them more vulnerable. What do you think?

And I'm sorry Teya but 60 territories are remaining also.

The map already feels so much more open. :D

I still think the sheer number of impassable borders is making things more cramped than they need to be. Would you consider shortening or removing some of the uneccessary waterways. For example, the river South of Mulgrave is kind of pointless.

How much area does the map cover? I'm not familiar with Queensland geography, so I'm just curious. To me it feels like a map of the suburbs, but it appears to cover a fair length of coastline.

Has the area been squished in a similar way to Battle for Australia? That's the impression I'm starting to get.

Phew...that's encouraging.

Removal of Mulgrave River - Being done...in previous V26.
The swamp water area was Andy's idea, and Tinaroo Dam was my addition. I have removed that also, but am not sure about removing Andys swamp.

How much area does the map cover?

Approx. 240km from I'fail to Daintree...about 180km from Green Island to Dimbulah....driving. I hour drive from Cairns to I'fail, Cairns to Mareeba, 1:20 Cairns to Atherton, slightly longer up the Gillies; I:40 Cairns to the Daintree. The roads are very winding, caused my the increddible mountain ranges.

I'm not familiar with Queensland geography, so I'm just curious. To me it feels like a map of the suburbs, but it appears to cover a fair length of coastline.

This might be the suburbs if it were built up with infrastructure and cement, but it is largely the areas as described....Dairy Farmers is full of Fresians and dairy farms, Atherton grows corn and maize terribly well, and Babinda-Gordonvale has the majority of the sugar crop.

Has the area been squished in a similar way to Battle for Australia? That's the impression I'm starting to get.

No, if anything I stretched it in height because of Teyas first initial comments about it being squashed, and also opened up Kuranda to Topaz territories in height to allow them more room. Check back to the P1 and you'll see how it has been stretched. The bright map on P1 is the original dimensions.

And...thanks for wanting to understand. :D

Huh? I dont recall saying anything about removing or adding more territories. :?

I definantly think the map looks less cluttered now.
I think something needs to be done about the mountains. Where you have them going in a straight line down the map... it doesnt look right. Maybe make a couple more mountain templates and mix it up a bit.

Check on P1 Teya. :) I appreciate that you find it cramped, but as stated before this is the small map, and I have made several attempts to arrange territories bigger in size so it looks less cluttered. That includes expanding the height of the initial map.

I definantly think the map looks less cluttered now.

I'll see what I can come up with, but they will have the same feel to them i.e. colouration etc. I'll post something soon.

Thanks Teya for your repsonse. :)

I said continents, not territories. Im also not sure why you brought that up again. And just to clarify, have you made the map smaller since then? I cant remember. But if a map seems too big on my monitor and I have to scroll, it probably is too big. My monitor isnt little.

As for the mountains, I dont mean change the colour. Just make a template or 2 that are different shapes to the ones you have at the moment. Just so there is some variation in the areas that go in a straight line.

Yes in in the overall context of what we are discussing here, it's that the map is too cluttered for u. So I take it meaning that the removal of continents as stated earlier will mean less clutter, and to me that means removal of territories, to make others larger and the overall map less cluttered. If you're going to remove continents to make it less cluttered then territories are going to have to go. Logical to me.

And just to clarify, have you made the map smaller since then?

Yes the original map posted 4 Feb was 660 px high, and you complained you had to scroll too much. So i did make it smaller, then it became too cluttered and it seems it is still too cluttered :? I'm sorry but my end result is that 60 territories will remain in the stated regions.

But if a map seems too big on my monitor and I have to scroll, it probably is too big. My monitor isnt little.

My monitor is small Teya, and I don't complain about having to scroll in playing any of the maps in CC, even when I have to scroll, which just happens to be on most maps ,because I have to scroll in order to press attack button. I don't think you are hard done by if I have to do the same thing.

As for the mountains, I dont mean change the colour. Just make a template or 2 that are different shapes to the ones you have at the moment. Just so there is some variation in the areas that go in a straight line.

As stated I'll see what I can do, but this vertical structure is largely because of the nature of Agate Hills.

I never said remove territories or continents, so please stop putting words in my mouth. Yes, I said it had too many continents for my liking. I never said remove.

As for the clutter. Most of it had to do with useless things you had lying around the map. Mountains and rivers doing nothing, tableland rises, waterfalls.

As for me complaining the map was too big to begin with,
Height is flexible, but it is recommended that you do not exceed 350 px on small maps and 600 px on large maps so that users will not need to scroll down to attack.
that is in the "how to make a map" thread. So if I was the only person complaining at the time, I wouldnt have been for long.

So please move on from what I wrote on the first page and dont blame me that your map is cluttered because of reducing the size of the map.

3Apr V26 Update
Image

Original Map
Image

Updated 24Mar07 - Small map now 600w x 526h.

Now - 60 countries in 10 regions.

This map is constructed from the Cairns Coastline in North Queensland Australia, and incorporates the Atherton Tableland and some of the islands that can be visited.

The location of Rivers and Moutains serves to act as natural barriers to limit the only routes from the Tableland region to the coast. The names of the countries are specific to this region.

Any feedback is most welcome. :D :(

Mountains: I don't think it's so much the graphic Teya has problems with, it's that they're all in a line. They look like people put them there on purpose rather than a naturally forming mountain range, at least in the areas where they're straight.

Openness: You could remove more of the mountains between Dimbulah and Araga Mill, which wouldn't actually change the borders but it would "feel" more open. You could also remove the mountains between Tinaroo Dam and both The Gillies and Mulgrave, so it now borders them both. I do think you need to replace the mountains between Paddys Green and Dimbulah, bringing Fruit Pickers from 6 borders to 5 (while not effecting Agate Hills).

Tinaroo Dam: I liked that, I think you should put it back.

Cramped/size: This is the small map of a map which has 60 territories. Predecessors with that many or more territories are North America, World 2.1, and Chinese Checkers. North America is 507px long and seems a lot more cramped to me on the small map, especially in the middle. World 2.1 is 610px long (as well as 700px wide) and feels WAY more cramped. Chinese Checkers basically has no territories, only the army dots, and only uses single letters for the name. Of all of these maps, Chinese Checkers causes the most confusion (deploying to Orange-D instead of Yellow-D, etc.).

Your concerns are not unfounded, but I'm not 100% certain what you want done here, Teya. You want the map to be shorter and to feel less cramped at the same time, all while not reducing the number of territories. I can't think of any way to do that, so if you've got suggestions I'd love to hear them.

Yes, samus is right about the mountains. I dont have problems with the graphics of them.

As for the other comment, this is what the problem is with cairnswk quoting something from the first page. I never wanted reduced territories, and It was too tall at the start. Before he reduced it.
Seriously. Forget what was said on the first page.

Enigma, I have a 19" monitor and BEFORE THE MAP WAS REDUCED I NEEDED TO SCROLL.

5Mar V27 - Addition of Hang-gliders

by cairnswk
Moving right along......!

* Some mountains opened up as requested
* To solve the issue of the coast having an advantage over the inland territories, I have used the new idea as indicated - Hang-gliders can attack from west to east (passable to unpassable) - this gives an extra attack lane into the coastal territories.
* Removal of another river

I'm sorry group, but I won't relinquish on those mountains between Tinaroo and The Gillies.

just remove a bit of the mountains and add an arrow.

Yeah, I agree. Topaz to Bartle Frere, Danbulla to Mulgrave. This solves the problem KEYOGI was referring to (although I still contend it will be one of the ONLY maps which doesn't have this "problem"). If you start from Bananaland, in order to take Sugarland you would now increase to 4 borders right away. If you move on to take City Estates, you would wind up with 4 borders total, but need to increase to 5 borders while taking it.

Rainforest now has access to Sugarland, and you now cannot move into The Gillies or The Lakes without increasing your borders.

Individually, this has no effect on the region's borders, so the region bonuses stay the same. They're just harder to hold together.

Good suggestion DiM. :)

I have removed the Gliders and replaced them with Skyrail.
As suggested:
Topaz to Bartle Frere
Danbulla to Gordonvale
and Palm Cove to Kuranda

I would like if I could not to have to use arrows as this is done on every other map. I prefer the idea of having some unique things on this map.

Samus - tinaroo dam is back, and some mountains have been bulked.

Hope this satisfies.! :D
