Flat rate fare from JFk into Manhattan is $45, I believe. Not a terrible fee.

If you goto empire state building check the times and roll in about 45 minutes before the observation deck closes.

madison avenue above the 60's is nice if you like shopping. Very expensive

downtown, battery park, statue of liberty (i think the tour into the statue is closed), Wall street.

Lincoln Center upper west side in the high 60's. Might be dark check website for performances.

I will definitely be getting one of those week subway card thingies. I decided early on not to hire a car, even for the drive up to NE. I was told that i should catch a game at the stadium if there was one on, and to buy a pizza under boston bridge...not quite sure why though.

Is there anything worth seeing in Jersey itself? We will be staying in East Rutherford, so it would make ense to try Jersey coty for at least a day.

I have not, but I also had the pastrami at Katz's deli. How does it compare?

liberty science center in jersey city is cool, but not worth taking away from your NY trip to see. i love jersey, but stick to seeing ny.

My absolute favorite thing in NY is the Cloisters in Fort Tryon Park. It's a medieval art museum and the park has amazing views of the Hudson River and the NJ Palisades. The museum houses the very famous Unicorn Tapestries as well as a lot of other cool stuff. Take the A train uptown to the very last stop. It's part of the Metropolitan Museum of Art (another must see) and what I'm about to tell you will change your whole trip....

why? because admission fees at the Met are considered donations, and they only "suggest" $15 or whatever the sign reads. Me and a friend went to the Cloisters last week and paid $5 for the two of us. The person selling tickets will not judge you or even flinch.

After you go to the Cloisters, which is quite small and does not need a whole day, go and check out Harlem. You're already there. Go to Sylvia's Restaurant Sylvia's Restaurant at 328 Lenox Ave, NY, NY. Phone 212.996.0660. If not, head to museum mile and go to the Met, you've already paid your dollar! Just hold on to the little "M" pin they gave you at the Cloisters (a fun little souvenir too).

If you feel like staying in Fort Tryon Park, eat at the New Leaf Cafe. The singer/actor Bette Midler owns it and your meal helps fund green spaces and playgrounds in NYC. The food is great and they make a drink with bacon infused bourbon. It might just be on the brunch menu, but ask for it anyway.

My favorite Greenwich Village restaurant is Dojo at 14 West 4th Street, NY, NY.

Definitely do NOT rent a car for the city, but I strongly suggest that you rent a car for the drive to New England. For an American vacation you may not find a greater pleasure than driving across the country side at your own leisure. At least this is what I've discovered through various road trips.

Either way it sounds like you have a pretty solid trip planed. Are you visiting any relatives?

For the NY part it's purely a holiday...we're going to NE to a barbeque set up by a friend in a chess site i play at. We both play guitar and get on well. (here is one of his efforts, i find his playing style funny...http://www.youtube.com/user/Barbutt#p/u/55/LhFOJG7_E-Y)

Most of Manhattan is fun to walk through. So its easy to walk everywhere. I advise that you not be intimidated to learn the subways from the start. You'll see more places that way.
