I don't know what IMAX means but aren't there like 2 theaters on Shattuck, and The Oaks on top of Solano, and probably others in Berkeley?

IMAX is that huge screen with the ridiculous surround sound system. It's way better than regular for epic films or ones with great visual effects. The ones on shattuck (theres 3) are just regular ones. The only other IMAX I know of is in Emeryville but it was a normal screen upscaled for IMAX and not as good as the Metreon.
