I can think of a few good acting performances that corresponded to good scripts. One in particular comes to mind. Very rarely, if ever, do critics (or anyone else) say "The movie was awesome because of [actor x]." I'm wracking my brain to think of a movie with a bad script and good acting.

Dicaprio is as talented as any other 50 actors. People didn't like The Departed or Gangs of New York or whatever because Dicaprio was in it. They liked them because the script and story were good.

I like certain actors in certain roles. I thought Daniel Day Lewis was excellent in Gangs of New York. I thought Al Pacino and Robert Deniro were excellent in Godfather II. I thought Heath Ledger's performance was outstanding in The Dark Knight. I would not say Daniel Day Lewis was an outstanding actor generally; similar with Pacino, Deniro, Ledger.

You don't need to do so. Remember we're not talking about great epic performances with badly written characters. Just good performances with badly written characters. And there are plenty of those.

Well then you agree with me! It does matter what actor plays what role. You can't swap any talented actor into a role and get the same result! Do you think Christian Bale would've been an as good Joker as Heath Ledger? Or would Heath ledger been an as good Batman as Christian Bale? You shouldn't call yourself good looking btw lol. Comes off slightly egocentric.

Good call on Leonardo DiCaprio. I used to have low expectations of him as a "pretty face" boyish actor, but the man has range. What's your take on Joseph Gordon-Levitt?

I do not know if Christian Bale would have made a good Joker. I tend to think he would have.
Calling myself good looking comes off as very egocentric.

I have liked some of Joseph Gordon-Levitt's roles (I liked his character in Third Rock).
Do any of you go see movies because a particular actor is in that movie? Do you go see Heath Ledger movies or Christian Bale movies or Daniel Day Lewis movies?

By range, I mean the ability of an actor to portray widely different characters and be believable. Not a dictionary definition, I'm afraid, but the best way I can put it.
With DiCaprio, in the past he was usually a down point for me going to see a movie. I was wrong, but wrong in a good way. Inception, Departed, Revolutionary Road, Shutter Island...
I went in with lower expectations, came out respecting him more and more.
I'd probably go and see a movie if Daniel Day-Lewis was involved.

If Dicaprio excelled in a comedy or playing a role against type, I may be inclined to agree that his range has expanded. With the exception of What's Eating Gilbert Grape (I don't put much stock in actors playing mentally deficient folks) and perhaps Titanic, I don't believe Dicaprio has played wide range of characters.
I agree on directors, mostly because, like "good" actors, they choose their projects.

I don't think Dicaprio is good at portraying characters, but I agree he's good at picking good scripts. And yes, I understood what you meant originally. If Dicaprio starred in a movie with a great script that was a movie I did not want to see for whatever reason, I would not see it because Dicaprio was in it. I think you would. That's the difference, I think.
I think we have very different qualifiers on why we would go see a movie. I don't think I've ever picked a movie to watch because a certain person in the film is a good or bad actor. I can't think of one off the top of my head (that doesn't involve an attractive woman).
For example, I want to watch the movie Lincoln. I'm looking forward to it (with some trepidation because I don't want them to screw it up). It is not because Daniel Day Lewis in the movie, it's because I think Lincolin is a compelling character.

Oh believe me I am not saying John Wayne is a great actor. He should of never made the movie "The Conqueror" where he portrayed Genghis Khan. He has his limitations. I would of liked to have seen Lon Chaney Sr. in talkies to see how he compared to others. His talent in pantomime to express his characters in several films I saw was impresssive.

i recall a British actor complaining pointing out British actors dont get leading man action roles but Aussies do. why is that?
besides James Bond there doesn't seem to be any major leading male roles for Brits. we have Hugh Jackman, the guy in Thor and the one in Avatar. Canadians and Americans have numerous ones but the British dont seem to have any.

I completely agree with you greenoaks. Why was Christian Bale passed over for Batman Begins, et al? Why didn't Damien Lewis get the role of Dick Winters in Band of Brothers? Ewan McGregor and Jude Law are always being passed over for roles playing Americans too. The injustice!
Did any of you see that movie about the wolves that attack all of the Americans in Alaska? I don't remember who the lead was, but it certainly wasn't some British guy trying to do an American accent! Or that movie where the same guy's daughter gets kidnapped by bad guys in Paris. That was either an American or an Australian, but definitely not British actor.
I even heard that new Spiderman movie had an English guy audition, but he was laughed at and definitely not cast.

Meanwhile, I can't help but feel sorry for British actors. What with all of the Americans constantly being cast to play Brits. Why can't these movie dudes just find a British guy to do a British accent?
Have any of you seen Your Highness? I can't tell whether these guys are Americans or Britons because the accents are so perfect, but if it was Americans, THAT IS SUPER UNFAIR.
