Auto attack

Well I think auto attack is only good for free style if your in a rush, just like owenshooter said but yea I would like to stop at that 20-20 situation, becouse ending up 3-17 could just cost you the game, Ihave learnd to watch out on freestyle games becouse it can change in a second. I just know I have auto attacked and regret it more than just the one roll at a time. i like to try and move slow and study. Auto attack seems like a rush and maybe more mistakes could be made doing it that way.

Some thoughts:

On the auto-attack issue, I used to never use it when taking out players in escalating singles games, because I was paranoid about losing 40 armies in a row... however now I often use it because:

1) I am too lazy to attack everytime now, it used to take me nearly a full hour to clear the board and I simply don't care enough to do that anymore.

2) I lost bad rolls enough when rolling normally, so I'd rather find out my dice suck in 1 second than 5 minutes

3) I still use normal attack usually when testing my dice at the start of an attack (if it is less than certain), so I can stop if my dice are bad without throwing away the game.

On the strategy issue, I could tell someone everything I know about strategy but it would not make them play like me... I think strategy is a very instinctive thing. Watching good players is a good idea, it will help you understand what good and bad moves are. However, I would say:

a) Every player has their own style - you must find one that comes naturally to you. Trying to copy another player entirely will make life difficult.

b) Trust your instincts - once you know the basics of how to play, and gather more experience it should become more natural what are good options and bad, your instincts tell you what will fit in best with your style ;)

c) Be bold! It is better to risk a loss to get a win than to lose being cautious. But be sensible when taking risks, and try to hedge to lessen the risk of giving the game away.

I use auto, when it doesnt matter, in speed games, and when I absolutely need an upset to win. The more important the battle, the less ill take the chance.

Totally. I basically only use Auto when my game is done, and I can try a desperation 10 v 30, and I don't have the heart to suicide my guys by hand. I think auto-attack DEFEINITELY increases the streakiness of dice. You'll see 5-10 (or more) double wins/losses in row quite commonly.

There's never going to be a hard-and-fast rule like that, to get to the top. Like Blitz said (and he would know a lot better than I would), experience is probably the most important thing. Let's take your example of "stop attacking at 5 armies". Even if this were a GREAT strategy, the difference between the best, and the rest, would be knowing when to apply that "rule". Short answer, there is no strategy that will be perfect all the time. The real skill lies in being able to adapt your strategy to fit what's going on in a particular game.

I just thought of one thing that the top players all do the same. They don't play tournaments.
