Could be the same thing... lights passing through clouds might appear green... I believe the sky in Hampton roads was clear.

Outstanding!
When i was in high school, i believe it was my freshman year in 65, a couple friends of mine did the same thing using balsa wood frames and plastic bags from a local dry cleaners. They put candles on the framework, and the heated air sent the bags a few hundred feet up in the air. The results were the same - people freaking out about UFOs and flooding the local switchboards with hysterical reports. Good times.
