Good programmer slogan: If it ain't broken, don't fix it...

Amen to that. I didn't see an answer to this question by the way.

Ever since 4.7.3, analyze snapshot hasn't been working properly.
In version 4.7.3 I could click on an old snapshot, and then click "analyze snapshot", and it would highlight all territories that changed in color or in number, so I could easily see what changed from that snapshot to present. Now analyze snapshot moves the screen to show the full map but does no highlighting.

I'd rather have you reporting for the new version of course, and older versions will get stuck at 4 maps for now (wwII europe, phillipines, europe 1914, peloponnesian war). But you can get the version 4.7.3 at these 2 locations (just click the link):
http://userscripts.org/scripts/source/13076.user.js
http://userscripts.org/scripts/version/ ... 03.user.js

(and btw, it was a very obvious fix so I already made it in 4.7.8,it should be fixed if you download it again.I think I'd confuse ppl even more if I created a new version now.)

And about suggestions:

dying_sphynx, 'average time per turn': I don't think it would work well for freestyle, and I don't actually do anything with the time at the moment. Maybe it should be an option that gives you the averages once you press a button, but even then the results depend on timezones etcetera. It's certainly doable, but I question the use of it a bit.

Shino Tensei, 'Auto-Gimp': I will have to check how the site handles that. But the thought has crossed my mind before, so it would definately be useful.

Shino Tensei, 'foes on gamelist': Hmm, that sounds like something the site should implement. Might be able to do that, I'll have a look.

First off Sherkaner, thanks for the good work! I know there are going to be the usual "user" complaints, don't let it get you down. Back when I wrote code (yes, even COBOL) I didn't call them bugs, just undocumented features.. ;)

New oddities (undocumented features) I've noticed include:
View Options (Minimum HUD width) is no-op now, seems to be ignored and the HUD matches the map size, feature or bug?
Escalating games no longer show the next turn-in value, is this because of the name change from cards to spoils?
Analyze snapshots no-op, but someone else has reported that
Revert to live makes all the armies disappear (actually even Yeti's versions did this - just worked around by refresh)

And thanks for your remarks.
View options: you're right, will be fixed in the next version
Redemption value for escalating games: Intentional, since the site now shows the next redemption value too (in front of the cards). No reason to show it in 2 different spots.
Analyze snapshot: will be fixed in next version.
Revert to live: I don't take snapshots myself, so I'm a bit in the dark about this. What would you expect it to do, other than a refresh? (as it still does as far as I see, didn't touch that part of the code yet.)

Ok, found where the site shows spoils, the view HUD option was messing me up, have a 16x9 monitor and there's a wrap problem, which is why I like HUD at 1000 (1200 would even be better).

The snapshots option is great in fog games, the bug works like this: Take snapshot, wait a round, examine old snapshot and revert to live, works fine. ANALYZE snapshot and then revert to live, all the armies disappear, and the map just has blanks where armies (or even question marks) should go. If you'd like, I can create some foggy games and we can play them and you'll see what I mean. Maybe I'll even play badly so you can have my points for your troubles... ;)

BOB rocks. Always has. Had a bit of a problem lately, tho. Today, actually. When I enter a game, "Initializing BOB" notification comes up and does not go away. Wiped Cache. Removed 4.7.8. Removed Greasemonkey. Reinstalled Greasemonkey and 4.7.8. Still happens. Any sort of debug info I can look at?

UPDATE: Works now. 4.7.9 may have fixed it. Or, more likely, just a wetware error.

Ok, HUD can now be set at 1200. The thing where all armies disappear is not limited to the snapshot as far as I can tell. The numbers are actually an image that is generated on the server. If for some reason the image can't be retrieved, the armies disappear (happens too when you refresh alot for some reason). Couldn't correct it, but when it happens BOB now asks whether you'd like to refresh the entire page (which solves it).

Parsing XML problems should be ok on the 4 afflicted maps most notably Philippines.

(Pelopponnesian,WWII Europe and Europe 1914 were worked around already, I believe)

PROBLEM:

I recently downloaded the new update. Iv'e had BOB and everything else for over a year now, and no problems before.

Now all of a sudden, my games won't load. The little white sign saying "BOB initializing", stays on my screen forever. I can see the map in teh background, but this thing never leaves. :?

I've uninstalled everything (including greasemonkey), and re-installed it, and no fix. Also, clicky doesn't seem to be working, even when I disable BOB. I thought they were 2 different things?

thx

6evil9: No option would be possible, since I don't believe the site's code would allow for it. Though I'm not sure why you would want to throw less dice? The decision to do so in the standard set of rules for Risk is based on not wanting to advance 3 guys automatically, which doesn't happen on this site.

Any chance that a counter for total missed turns could be added... perhaps in brackets beside the current turns missed? It would be a helpful reminder for who to nail with poor gameplay feedback for missing many turns without deadbeating.

Thanks! :)

This is already in BOB, you just have to turn on extended stats.

ryansigg wrote:Any support/compatibility for Greasekit in the works?

Not really. One of the reasons to use JQuery was to make it more compatible for things like this.
But I don't know the differences yet between greasemonkey and greasekit. And from what I've seen by trying to find those, I don't think it will be easy to make compatible.

@PepperJack: thanks for answering that one. Maybe if a game is finished a summary would be better in stead of the stats, the average time suggestion would fit there too.

@6evil9: Shino is right, if you have 4+ troops you will throw 3 dice. If you mean how many times to attack, there's no clean solution with the way the site works atm.

Snapshots disappear and potential recovery?

Hi gang.
Does anyone ever experience BOB snapshots disappearing - as in all of them? Firefox just hung/crashed on me, and when I restarted it all of my snapshots were gone. This has happened to me once or twice before, but I had (perhaps mistakenly) attributed those disappearances to browser upgrades - no such change this time.

Which brings me to my more important question: is there any way to recover them?

Thanks,
Lincecum

BOB uses the user preferences of firefox to store them. If you go to 'about:config' (URL in firefox) and search for 'BOB' you should see some lines, 1 for all options in BOB, 1 for the list of snapshots and 1 per snapshot. If the 1 per snapshot-line is missing (the actual data), there's no way to retrieve it.

I don't know what happens when FF crashes. But I'd say it doesn't usually remove those preferences.. I'll try to find out something about that.

Thanks for pointing me to the config area. I do have a ton of entries there along the lines of (I truncated the data):

(I have a dutch firefox-version, so I could mistranslate something)
go to the extra-menu, and click add-ons. Then if you're in the extensions-tab (default as far as I know), it should have a button at the bottom, find updates.
Firefox does that normally at startup, but that could be switched off. Last version should be compatible with 3.5.2.
