by Quirk
Monty Python and the Holy Grail
The Godfather (Part 1 & 2)
Apocalypse Now
The Good, the Bad and the Ugly
Doctor Zhivago
Repo Man
Blade Runner
To Kill a Mockingbird
Do the Right Thing
Drugstore Cowboy
Animal House
Caddyshack
Airplane!
Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory
A Clockwork Orange
The Song Remains the Same
Jaws
A Christmas Story
Star Wars

I didn't include all the movies I watched on HBO as a kid in the 80's. Partly because I can't remember them all and partly because that list could get embarrassing. I know I've seen movies like Caveman, The Beastmaster and Yellowbeard well over ten times plus countless viewings of James Bond films.

I'm 40, so this is going to be a long list.

Alien
Aliens
Terminator
Terminator 2
Jason and the Argonauts
Clash of the Titans
Sound of music
Chitty Chitty Bang bang
Oliver
wizard of oz
Mary Poppins
Pinochio (the best ever animated film from Disney)
Princess Bride. (the best quote seemed to get lost on the American War Dept... Never get involved in a land war in Asia)
Scarface (best gangster film ever)
ET
Life of Brian
Jaws
Shawshank Redemption
Zulu
Stir Crazy
Blazing saddles
Bill and Ted excellent adventure
Toy Story
Posiedon Adventure
El Cid
Spartacus
Ben Hur
Matrix
Star wars episodes 3,4,5,6
The Vikings
Tora Tora Tora
The Battle of the Bulge (If ever there was a film that could do with being remastered in CGI studio, it's this one. It would be sooo much better with Robert Shaw in a King Tiger or a Panther, verses the Allies in an old Sherman. A historical Film about a tank battle is sadly let down by historically incorrect tanks used)
Every James Bond film upto Timothy Dalton
Dusk Till dawn
the nightmare before Christmas
A grand day out (wallis n grommet)
John Carpenters The Thing
close encounters
the great escape
magnificent 7
Lock Stock and 2 smoking barrels
the towering inferno

I'm bored now

1. the eighties - VCR/VHS..
we watched movies everyone had seen while playing records and commodore or nes

2. the nineties - yes but have you seen it stoned..

3. late night reruns.. watching movies with the sound almost off works if you live in a country that go for subtitles instead of dubbing

4. hangovers

Star Wars (New Hope-Return of the Jedi)- Probably the three best Sci-fi movies ever created, although they were ruined by the prequels.

Indiana Jones (Raiders of the Lost Ark-The Last Crusade)- Again, the new movie ruined the franchise.

Jurassic Park- Shoot Her! Shoot Her! Loved the book, but the movie was awesome.

V for Vendetta- The one movie I would say that was better than the book.

The Dark Knight- The only superhero movie that I truly like

Kelly's Heroes- The only comedy about WWII that I know of (that actually shows combat scenes)

Spaceballs- Mel Brooks, John Candy; Need I say more?

The question is: what movies have you seen more than 10 times?

Patton (one of the most enjoyable movies I've ever seen)
A League of Their Own (one of the greatest sports movies ever)
Willow (my wife's absolute favorite movie)
Grease (was reminded of this one as I read the lists of others)
All of the Star Trek movies except "The Motionless Picture" (aka #1)

I think that's probably it, though MAYBE something from my childhood that I'm just not remembering. When my kids watched movies (not that much, we tried to keep them away from the television as much as we could), I was usually reading or working on something there in the room, so I don't think I can count that.

jonesthecurl wrote:2001 a Space Oddessey : unique in my list in that I've seen it that often in a cinema. I watched it once on TV and it simply didn't work. On the big screen, especially the extra-wide ones they used to have ("cinemascope"?) it was jaw-dropping.

Oh my God, how could you stand the boredom? I do mean that. I rented this movie fully expecting to love it (I do love science fiction)...and the plot was good, but WHAT A BORING MOVIE.

jonesthecurl wrote:The Princess Bride: I've gone on about this before. If you missed it, my opinion is that you haven't got the point if you haven't seen the movie AND read the book - they are a single work of art.

Great movie. Loads of fun.

jonesthecurl wrote:Starship Troopers: every time I see this I sit in the corner muttering about how they butchered Heinlein's plot, and how bad the science is. But I still love it.

Haven't seen it (though I do love Heinlein).

jonesthecurl wrote:Excalibur: simply the best movie ever made.

Definitely a favorite of mine.

jonesthecurl wrote:The Magnificent 7: always used to be on the TV on Bank Holidays. An absolute classic. They tried to do it again and again, but it never worked. Yes, I watched 7 Samurai too, but this was a part of my childhood. And that soundtrack!

I think I've seen it, but I'm having trouble pulling up the plot, so perhaps I haven't. I'll have to check it out.

jonesthecurl wrote:Zulu: Again, on the box every Xmas. Beautiful stuff. Can't you see their spearpoints gleaming?

I don't care for that genre, personally...unless I'm thinking of the wrong movie.

jonesthecurl wrote:The Rocky Horror Picture Show: unique.

Unique is the right word for it. It definitely takes some getting used to, particularly if you see it live (the only way to really see it).

jonesthecurl wrote:The Wind in the Willows: The 90's animated version with Alan Bennet and Rik Mayall among others doing the voices. I loved it, the kids loved it, I still find it hard to walk through a woods without shouting out in an Alan Bennet voice Ratty! Oh, Ratty, I'm such a fool!

Never heard of it - it sounds like fun.

This has been a GREAT thread, just because it has reminded me of so many movies that I would like to watch again.

You absolutely have to see it on the big screen - the bigger the better. It simply does not work on a TV.
I think one of the saddest moments in all cinema is the gradual execution of HAL. Daisy, daisy, give me your answer do...

It's the one about Rorke's Drift. Great performances from a host of brit superstars like MIchael Caine, amd 40,000 zulus.

It's the most faithful adaptation of the classic kid's novel - there have been many - Disney's version was called "Toad of Toad Hall" - and stank.

Give it a few more pages and I ight even do a summary of what's the most common ones. There's some popular ones I don't know, some I don't like, many appear only only on one list. It's an interesting take.

Oh, I should include the Power Rangers Movie in my list. The curlson loved it and watched it over and over.

I have the impression that the Python Grail film is the most popular.

Ohhhhh wait almost forgot:

All of the Planet of the Apes: The original ones, not the corny remake. Way back when TV used to be just 3 channels one of these would be the Friday Night Late Movie at least once a month.

Who else here remembers The Saturday Afternoon Kung-Fu Theater??

Lord of War-highly underrated in my opinion, I would argue one of Nicolas Cage's best roles if not THE best.

Fearless, -Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon Going back to my heritage and I do love a traditional wushu film. Regrettably, I have only seen House of Flying Daggers once, although I would like to see it again.

Shoot em Up-Something you show to your friends as pure awesome.

Pulp Fiction-Tarantino at his best. There are some many quotables. Should be a rite of passage when everyone is of age.

Forrest Gump-My favorite movie and a fun little commentary on 20th century US history.

Black Hawk Down-Manages to transcend just another war film with some of the rawest emotion I have seen. War is Hell.

300-A symphony of sound and special effects.

Gangs of New York-great epic gangster movie with a civil war background

Awesome choices, everyone here has great taste. Bought heat and we were soldiers yesterday on the strength of the recommendations in this thread. Also, partially bought the latter due to the fact that my dissertation topic has now been approved, which is based upon interpretations of Vietnam in film, so part of my primary source collection for it include apocalpyse now, deerhunter, full metal jacket, taxi driver, platoon and the green berets (which I haven't seen). Going to enjoy writing 10,000 words on those :)
