For future years, it might best to generate the random list and the scroll through until you find a gap of 12 players that seems to be balanced. This will still result in a random mixing, but will also have a control built in for situations like this and in cases with no mafia for example.

BTW, I don't mean that I played well and only lost because of the setup. I am just saying that in addition to my screw-up, the setup didn't help.

I did consider that, but I didn't know how much work it would be, so I went for blind random.

Yeah, that was only going to go one way. If this were done again alignment should be predetermined and then roles randomly from the appropriate category (scum/3rd/town/whatever) This could help balance quite a bit.
