New Classic Map

by LinK89
I know this new classic map is hated by all, but I noticed...
It is strategically the same as the original map but without the look of the Earth and continents. Temporary or not, this map forces you to see the classic map for what it is, without the deceiving shape and connection of territories. Playing to conquer the earth and not a bunch of circles and lines is what CC is about, so as a replacement, this map is worthless. But as a temporary stand-in for a new real classic map, this could be useful to truely understand the map's strategies for CC or even Risk. Just think about it.

We were wondering that in Live Chat, since Middle Earth was removed yet Tamriel stayed.

Agreed,
but let us have better communication from CC; no half truths and then we will genuinely support and improve together.

well i am not thrilled at the way this was handled: throwing this map at us when the site must have known for some time. If you involve us in the situation we can help and therefore not become the disgruntled enemy.
i am also not filled with bonhomie at being lied to regarding 'Data providers', 'server crashes' and so forth .. this obviously is at the route of that!!
However, let's move forward and take the chance to make 2 beautiful replacement maps. Again please explain why this did not begin before .. (could be copyright issues again i suppose?)
Please communicate with the community better, so we can help get past this mess.
I can not look at the Classic Temporary map, so let's move quick sharp.
And if we can not move quickly then explain to us why not please!

I concur!
Let's don't forget Middle Earth too! I can't stand
Center Scape....

Dude, the only games I usually play are Classic and Middle Earth. Imagine my surprise when I got home from work and turned on the computer and saw the monstrosity that is Classic and Center Scape!
I wanted to piss all over the computer screen.

Something makes me really doubt this is because of legal issues. Don't you think Hasbro would have noticed earlier? CC's been online for almost 3 years...

New (Classic) Map needs some workover

The new (classic) map looks now very difficult to see, especially on small handheld devices.
Suggestions:
Group what would beofre be seen as a continent closer together and further away from others.
Colours between what earlier would have looked like Africa and what would have looked like Asia are now to close.
Circles which contain number and colour of numbers should be bigger
Thanks!

Hasbro didn't much care until IPH wrote them a little letter after IPH and Wicked got banned from CC...

You have a very valid point here.
Hey guys here at CC: The community is your friend, not your enemy. So if you communicate with us better we will probably be able to help you more.
And I still think that if I was an important game company who owns the right to a board game similar to an online gaming site with 20,000+ online players, I would want to create a partnership with them instead of suing them. Is not the code or the maps, is the live community that has a lot of value! It would take a lot of effort for them to create it from scratch!

saraith wrote:I did a bit of research... I am after all on the internet

and I found this:
http://googlemapsmania.blogspot.com/2005/12/hasbro-puts-end-to-google-maps-risk.html Perhaps CC received a similar letter for Hasbro.
Further research Tells me that you can't copyright a game. Neither the name, nor the rules.
Only the unique graphics and pieces. Here's what the US Copyright office has to say about it - and they should know {url]http://www.copyright.gov/fls/fl108.html[/url]
The idea for a game is not protected by copyright. The same is true of the name or title given to the game and of the method or methods for playing it.
Copyright protects only the particular manner of an author's expression in literary, artistic, or musical form. Copyright protection does not extend to any idea, system, method, device, or trademark material involved in the development, merchandising, or playing of a game. Once a game has been made public, {b]nothing in the copyright law prevents others from developing another game based on similar principles[/b].
Some material prepared in connection with a game may be subject to copyright if it contains a sufficient amount of literary or pictorial expression. For example, the text matter describing the rules of the game, or the pictorial matter appearing on the game board or container, may be registrable.
So make your Risk game, your Camen Sandiego game, your Sim City game - you can even use the same name. All these attempted smack-downs by lawyers who should know better make me sick. No wonder Shakespeare said "first we kill all the lawyers."
Just my $0.02
You clearly are quoting out of context. Go see my post a few pages back.
The copyright office site you link to even mentions that there can be trademark issues. Also that the rules can be copyrighted. And it says nothing about patenting a process or protecting it as a trade mark ('ve actually never heard of a game patent that I can think of, but that doesn't mean there isn't one - actual physical dice are probably patentable, but I really really doubt anyone holds a current valid patent on them

).
When you look at the Google cease and desist letter, it's clear they screwed the pooch. Google is a deep pocket player, and they were calling the game "Risk". There was not choice but to shut them down. There is no reason cc should be concerned by that action and taking this drastic measures.
