Thats where I draw the line with religious tolerance, everybody is entitled
to their personal faith but nobody should expect it to overide the laws of the land. It happens all the time though, why should people expect others not to have a drink on a Sunday simply because it is a religious day to them ?

Because it's the law of the land, dipshit.

Are you referring to the no beer on Sundays bit? I'm pretty sure that that is less law of the land and more the law of Christianity.

He's referring to the law in the good State of Georgia big man Neoteny was (don't get me wrong, quite rightly) having a go at.

In any case, the Britain there is a State religion, so he's talking out of his arse.

Nappy no need to be insulting on every thread, its childish !
Yes I phrased it badly but the point I was making was that religious beliefs should not be imposed on others as in the case of Sunday closing.

Ah, sorry brooksy, you are all for the 'rights' of muslim women now who don't want to be forced to wear the burka, how humanitarian of you. It's funny, because you have no problem with British women being in the kitchen looking after you and all your cracker spawn that you've produced, being forced to serve their husbands.

Dickhead. Here is a newsflash. If YOU are uncomfortable with muslim women's choice of dress, that is YOUR problem. Not theirs.

I have suspected for sometime with your disgusting avatar that you are indeed a misogynist pig. Your comments above have confirmed that. Hopefully one day your eyes are involved in a horrible accident (say some form of acid) that leaves them blind and useless, then you won't have to worry about ugly women 'offending your eyes' - asshole

I would like to second that vote.

I do not think that the burka should be "banned" but I do believe that an employer has the right not to hire someone who wears a burka if they feel it interferes with the job. I remember a case about a teacher who wore a burka and the students couldn't understand her as a result.

People should have the choice of whether or not to wear a burka, but people should also have the choice of whether or not to associate with someone who would wear one.

On the other hand I know that it is illegal to wear masks or face coverings after a certain age. Based on these laws you could argue that it is already illegal to wear burkas. I think that this is a valid religous exception but then again, not all religous practices are legal (human sacrafice, polygymy etc.) so I could understand an argument that states they should/are illegal due to security reasons already.

you chose your laws by the society you live in. When 20+ female schoolkids burned to death in Saudi because the religious police didnt allow them to leave a burning school without thier burkas on, how can a society view the Burka with anything other than contempt.
yes i understand that BANNING this form of dress with a law is unjust and un enforcable... the garment remanis a tool of mysoginy and oppression of women.
and as i have said previously, it is NOT a religious garment! the Koran calls for the covering of the head, which in an Arab society with the sun blazing down is understandable.... this is about difference. it is a statement of exclusion from our society and an adhearance to the values of the medievil cultures of the middle east where women have NO rights WHATSOEVER!
Clinging to the values of the society which YOU chose to leave and demanding the society YOU chose to go to should change its values is like buying a house in a sewer and demanding that the shit stops stinking!
Those who wear the Burka do so through indoctrinated oppression by family members and a culture of Mysoginy.
( i have visions of a polar reverse of emily pankhurst chained to railings demanding to have the right to vote taken away from her)

I think this is very over-simplified. Although it is obviously a 'tool' of oppression in many situations, and should not be forced on anyone, many women wear it by choice, even to make a statement. I've spoken to several women who wear a Burka whose husbands never enforced the matter, and indeed one whose husband would have preferred her not to wear it. Those women wanted to wear the burka as a representation of their faith, of their commitment to Islam, as a protest against what they see as lax western morals... Indeed, we're seeing a resurgence of head scarves in the younger generation of Muslim women where their mothers gave up the garment. They want to represent their faith outwardly, to show they are not afraid to be Muslim in today's increasingly polarised society. Now that is certainly not everyone, and not even a majority, but how can you ban any item of clothing really? Sure, for legal or medical reasons there has to be limits (and there are, even if the laws are ignored sometimes, as in the airport example given earlier). Wearing a Burka isn't an affront to 'our' society or values any more than wearing a big fucking gorilla suit is. we cannot claim to welcome all religions if we don't welcome their right to wear what they want. As a 'Christian' country we don't wear skull caps, but should we ban Jews wearing those? or Sikhs wearing Turbans?

You can hide a bomb in a trainer.

No-one is seriously suggesting we ban Burkas because you can hide bombs under them. At the moment I'm in a freezing cold library wearing a fairly enormous Parka. I could easily fit a bomb under it. Should I ban my coat? (Please say no. It is very cold.)

Regardless of bomb's , wearing burkas allows people to hide their identity. It is illegal to wear a mask, so their is grounds to ban a burka.

What if a woman in a burka robbed a bank? What if a man in a burka pretending to be a woman snuck into a woman's restroom and commited rape?

I personaly think that burkas should be allowed but there are definately valid arguments against them.

Both of those situations are ones in which the criminal would be wearing a mask anyway... I don't really understand the relevance.

If a it is illegal to wear a face covering because it deemed as dangerous to the public at large, those same dangers exist with the burka. A person could pretend that they are wearing a burka for religous reasons when the motivation was in reality criminal. It gives people a way to more easily conceal their identity when engaging in violent acts.

I repeat, what's the difference between a burka and a scarf? Or a hood and a gator?

It's illegal to cover ones face? What about shaded motorcycle helmets? Scarves were already mentioned, you often see people with a scarf up to their nose, especially in winter. Are large sunglasses illegal, too? This is all quite new to me.
