And that's true, in my experience, the people who say being gay is a bad thing are usually trying to hide their own sexual confusion or preferences because they're aren't comfortable enough with themselves to admit it.

The comparison was between "That sucks" and "that is so gay", not simply "gay". Your equivalent would then have been "That Tom Cruise really sucks."
But it's true. Up until the modern usage, "suck" was a transitive verb, which means it requires an object: it sucks what? It is another way of calling someone gay, and like "that's gay", has been applied to inanimate objects after losing its original meaning.
My understanding of "That sucks" was that it was short for "That sucks dick" making it another gay insult.

Well, I'd also say that writing out slurs like that lessens the oomph. Kinda like when you write the word-that-must-not-be-named on POA (I didn't, I seem to remember it being Norse or somebody who discovered it) I don't think "gay" has become a decent part of the lexicon, and I'm not sure it ever will.
