ok, since that would be me lynched, can we unvote so that scum doesnt actuallly kill me

Well, if someone comes along and votes, we'll be sure to lynch them later, I don't think anyone would out themselves like that.
I'd personally prefer to hear MM give the confirmation first, so we know there aren't any secret unvotes or such flying around, that way, your identity will be completely confirmed.

But even if there wasn't, I wouldn't have been able to protect.....

The point is that MM gave me the CHOICE to protect. Sam is suggesting he was not given said choice. I doubt MM would put two different systems for people in the same game.
