And it was a close call on the third of those, HC, Germany nearly got that one as well as the combustion engine.

Hopefully it was meant to point out that a great deal of that effort was due to German scientists such as Von Braun - the "space race" was sometimes seen as "our Germans vs their Germans".
Please tell me there are no "Apollo was a hoax" believers out there.

If the Americans landed on the moon, they would turn hubble to point at where they knew they landed and show us a picure.
Soon we'll know for sure because Japan is mapping the moon in the same sort of detail as google earth.
I will believe america landed on the moon when a space telescope / mapping satellite shows me images.
Isn't anyone slightly surprised that no country has splashed these pictures across the media by now?
