What I meant by young players was the all-star quality young players that enter the league between 18 and 24. If they happened to use steroids before then, they won't be in the big leagues for long cause either 1. they will get caught 2. or they will have to stop using and do it on their own.

I totally agree that there are more and more young people using steroids, but most of the young talent coming into the major leagues probably does not. Most of the young guys make it on pure talent, and then have to prove themselves. The guys who have been caught started juicing once they made the big leagues to gain a competitive advantage (look at Bonds or McGwire early in their careers and then during the height of their homerun seasons).

A pitcher who still is pitching in the Major Leagues past 35 is very damn lucky. Father time has just caught up to John.

I hope that maybe they release him and he returns to the Braves as a reliever at least for a season but on the other hand I haven't seen him pitch he may not even be fit to relieve anymore...

I think the Cardinals should pick him up. It would be good for them to get another right handed middle-relief man.

I think they should too because I'm a Cubs fan . But seriously, it would be a nice pick up, if he was the old Smoltz, but I think he is a bit past his prime, so I'm not sure if a lot of teams are going to go after him. Plus the article said something about the Red Sox wanting to send him down to the minors. So who kows what will happen.

The Red Sox aren't paying Smoltz a ton of money so I can't see them releasing him unless he really doesn't have anything left, in which case who would sign him? I think the minors to find his groove is the way they are going to go.

Could be a sweep by the Yankees over the Red Sox. Are the Yankees really back?

White Sox are sneaking up on Detroit 2 games out
and the Rangers let the Angels of the hook, and drop 4.5 games back
but are just 1 game behind Boston in the AL wild card race & Tampa's right there too.
After today's game with the Angels, the RANGERS have the Sox up next.

On the NL side the Cubbies are just 1 game behind the Cardinals
while the Philly's and Dodgers still maintain some breathing room,
but there's a really tight 5 team race for the wild card.

I correction to that post. The White Sox are not sneaking up on Detroit. They have been between 2 and 5 games back for a while now. Not saying that they won't pass them, just that they aren't sneaking up because they have been on their heels for a while.

Also, the Tigers won, and the White Sox lost, giving Detroit a 3 game cushion again.

Speaking of Tigers and round white balls...

The Rangers shutout the Angels today to move one game closer in the West
and if the Yankees sweep the Redsox tonight the AL wildcard race will be tied.

The Red Sox are collapsing. I don't see them in the playoffs.

I admit there are other teams who have a much greater need for a relief pitcher of any kind and Smoltz has had a lot of sucess as a closer in the past. but I'd like to see Smoltz come back to Atlanta to finish his career. I was really upset when it was announced that he would be going to Boston and I'd like to see him back in Atlanta.

Classless move by the Red Sox dropping Smoltz. The guy's a future Hall of Famer; though most likely someone will pick him up, don't force him to have the chance to end his career on the free agent market. They couldn't find a better way to say, "We just don't think you have the arm strength anymore" than dropping him? Sheesh.

Are the Marlins back in contension? Will the Philly's be able to regain their composure after the Marlins' three game sweep?

Major League Baseball's a business? Anyways, we didn't even release him outright, we DFA'd him. If he wants to go to the minors to transition back to being a reliever, great. If somebody else wants him, better.

Giants and Rockies tied for Wild Card again, here's to hoping that the superior rotation will win out in the end.

I second that thought. That would mean Tigers back to the World Series! Don't take my word for it. John Kruk also believes the Tigers have the best rotation (especially 4-man for the playoffs) in the AL.

The Phillies will pull out of it, they usually fall off this time of year then ramp it up towards the end of August, September and October. Don't forget there is still the wavier trade deadline at the end of August, usually a move or 2 to aide the benches. The Phillies need to dump Eric Bruntlett ASAP!

But does it really matter? They'll choke by the end, even if they look somewhat promising prior to that. Just stay out of the way of the team that can actually win games in the postseason.

The cubs could win 150 games in the regular season and still blow it in three games during the post.
