I disagree... only in the fact that it only takes a few hours to work up a postable first draft.

To move into general Foundry Discussion, there needs be some sort of plan, and a working image (other than MS Paint or pencil/paper). Once we see those, we'll move it into 'production', essentially. This is to keep the threads where people are just posting ideas, and no actual development, out of the main discussion.
Or something like that. Expect an Announcement within the next few days/week, once we've got some more time.

But Andy this is part of the problem... It is too easy for maps to go missing in the Main Forum. How many good ideas, not nessacerally good maps, have been buried because they happened to post the idea and within a few hours where 10th or 15th and no longer at the top of the page? How many CC members truely look at every map? (I'm sure you and a few other 'Management' types do.)
All I would really like to see are an 'In Development' and a 'Map Makers Forum' for more specialized, one-on-one, disscussions with proven map makers and general disscusions from map makers... kind of like bussiness lessons on audio tape ("Come, let me show you how to make the best map ever!" and "Texturing, a Fine Art")
The Foundry shouldn't be split to the point that maps become hard to find, however the Map Foundry general disscusion area you speak of is
FIFTEEN pages long! At most the area with the current maps should be 2 or 3 pages. This would make it much easier for maps to be tracked by members.

Then create relevant threads in the general Map Foundry forum. If you or anyone else wants help, tips or advice on these sort of things then simply ask. If you have specific questions for a single cartographer, PM them.

The general Map Foundry forum is full of a lot of crap threads. I don't see how this is a problem though, they generally just fall through the many pages never to be looked upon again until some new member decides to add *bump*.

You are correct of course, in a totally democratic/capitalistic way of course... The good products rise and the rotten ones fall. The people get their say!
However, this is a commercial venture with the word CONQUER in it's title. The maps of the Foundry are its products. If they aren't made there is nothing to sell... other than the Classic map and a few of the more consistent preformers.
All I'm saying is that in a militant dictatorship business model like CC there's nothing wrong with a little organization in the Product Development Department.

PS - What is the bump? I think I know, but you damn kids are hard to understand most of the time.

I agree that another Foundry sub-forum would be good - a location to discuss map-making in general, as opposed to specific maps. When I posted the link to the UTexas maps, that's where it should have gone, as should threads on XML extension. That leaves Map Ideas for those maps that are still germinating, and of course the Map Foundry for viable maps in progress.
As it stands, to find information about map-making, you have to dig through pages of threads on specific maps. When the main foundry gets restricted to maps in progress, meta-discussions will be completely swamped by new map ideas, if they are grouped in the same forum. This proposal seems a reasonable and useful delineation.

Why cant people give new additions time to start working?
Less than a week after KEYOGI was made CA alot of people were complaining that the foundry system still wasnt working and saying it was too slow and more CA's were needed. 12 maps have been quenched since Ive been around. More than half of them in the last 2 months. So clearly the system has been made faster since the addition of a CA.
Why dont you give the sub-forums time to start working before complaining that there arent enough of them?
Then again, why complain that there arent enough sub-forums when KEYOGI and Andy are happy with what has been added.

That ^^^ isn't actually the map as used in the book series, it works though I suppose.

Personally, I don't think (suggestion for improvement) = (complaint).
I'm not suggesting that there are not enough sub-forums, as though the number were the issue. I'm suggesting that, like a library, separating out different kinds of content into different sections is useful to the community.
In terms of admins, clearly if they are unhappy with the forum layout it should be changed. Does that mean that if they are satisfied with it but other users would like changes, it should remain static?

That is my point. The foundry has been split and the community isnt giving it time to take effect. If Andy wanted more sub-forums to start with Im sure he would have asked Lack to give more. Why not try trusting the judgement of the people that run the site?
Andy, Keyogi.. feel free to correct me. But the way I understand it is that the map Ideas sub-forum is where ALL new maps start. When a map has developed a bit and has the support of the community to continue, it will be moved into The map foundry. If this is the case, a map should be developed enough, and should have enough support that the map shouldnt be abandoned, therefore not cluttering up the main forum.
Another point completely, but if you want to suggest more sub-forums, shouldnt you be doing that in the suggestions and bug reports thread?

While I like the book series, I don't think it lends itself well to a map. A map of the castle is just boring. Including places such as the lake, forest, Hagrid's hut, Hogsmead, etc would make it more interesting but all these things are so spread out it all seems kind of pointless. This sort of map would also require the skills of someone like mibi or WidowMakers to do it justice.

I actually really like the layout.
Of course, it needs major work...maybe the islands on the right need one more connection to the mainland...probably somewhere in the middle of them if I am making any sense...
Keep working on it!
