2010 Adjacent Attacks Tournament - Winner: OliverFA
Posted: Fri Dec 04, 2009 10:26 am
This tournament is for everyone who is interested in Adjacent Attacks (http://www.conquerclub.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=4&t=51364). If you have never heard of the Adjacent Attacks proposed gameplay - it is very simple: Newly conquered countries cannot attack (including tapping/slimming a territory) for the duration of the turn they are conquered on. This means no kill-runs, but a lot of strategy about what your best moves should be and planning for the future. Resetting neutral territories (missile launch in Arms Race!, Parade Deck in The Citadel, etc) are exempt from this rule, they can be attacked out of when captured. Since this is not yet coded into the website, this is an HONOR-BASED RULE and means that you should pay attention to your moves carefully to not break the rules.
This tournament will run for the duration of 2010, with new game(s) being created every Monday before noon CST. This is a ladder-style tournament, so you only need to join as many games as you wish, and both premium and freemium players are welcome! I plan on starting the first batch of games on Monday, January 4th, 2010, and hopefully will have a game slot for everyone signed up for the first week. I will request tournament privileges once I have 16 entrants, but games will not start until January 4th.
This tournament is open to everyone, and new entrants are welcome during the entire tournament. Each game will be 6 player, standard, automatic, sunny. Map, spoils, and reinforcements are to be chosen by the players in the tournament.
--- Scoring ---
The points will be broken down as follows:
Winner: 10 points
2nd place: 7 points
3rd place: 5 points
4th place: 3 points
5th place: 2 points
6th place: 1 point
In the event that a map with an objective is won by capturing the objective, the spots will be determined by the number of territories owned by the players that are not eliminated at the end of the game. This may not be ideal, but is the best way I could think of to determine placement in the game.
If a game goes past round 50, then a rule for owning large amounts of the board will go into effect. If someone owns 2/3 of the board or more, then they will be granted points. At round 75, the benchmark goes down to 3/5 of the board, and at round 100 it drops to 1/2 of the board. The games will continue to be played as AA games, this is just for points assignment in the tournament.
--- Violation of Adjacent Attacks rule ---
I will NOT be monitoring these games for rule violations, so players should feel free to PM me if there is a rule violation that needs to be addressed. I have chosen to make all of these games sunny in order to make it easier to track movements. Minor rule violations should be addressed by the players in the game and a consensus should be formed on how to proceed with correcting the error. You can always PM me to give suggestions on fixing the rule violation, and I reserve the right to make a final ruling if the players cannot agree. If the violation affects gameplay (takes away a bonus or otherwise majorly impacts a player), then 1 point will be deducted from the violator's final score. Major rule violations (such as a kill run or serial rule violation) will lead to removal from the tournament and your tournament ranking will be removed. I reserve the right to make the final ruling on all rules violations, regardless of the guidelines listed here.
--- Games ---
Each player will choose a map that they want to play on AA when they sign up, and we will use the maps in order of the signup of the players. The first week will have enough games to give everyone a chance to join, while subsequent weeks will have at least one game created per week, depending on demand. I will send out a PM Friday noon CST with the next two maps and settings to be played, and players can respond to which game(s) they want to join. Preference will be given to players lower on the ladder to have a chance to climb up - so if there are 7 people that respond that they want to play a certain map, the player with the highest score will be unable to join. This seems like the most fair way to ensure that the ladder is not top-heavy with those of us that enjoy AA games.
--- Sitters ---
If you need an account sitter, I STRONGLY recommend from experience that you get someone who is knowledgeable of AA rules to take the turns in your game. Having a sitter make a mistake is not an excuse, and you could be removed from this tournament due to the actions of your sitter. The following individuals have volunteered to account sit:
1. jakewilliams - AA tournament games ONLY, not all games
2. 72o - AA tournament games ONLY, not all games

1. Can beta maps be used? Sure, why not!
2. What happens with games that last a lot of turns? I'm planning on using the BOB Player Strength Indicator, it needs to be determined at what point we call the game a draw and choose this. I am looking through past and current AA games to get an idea.
3. Do I have to choose a map/spoils/reinforcements combo? No, if you don't choose one than you'll still be eligible to join any other game.
Please respond here or PM me with ANY questions. I accept entrance based on posting here or PM to me.
I hope everyone enjoys this and we can publicize the Adjacent Attacks option enough to get Lack to code it into the game engine!
