I'll demonstrate with an example from the Medals page.

Standard Achievement - Awarded to members that defeated X unique opponents in Standard games. Bronze=20, Silver=100, Gold=400

Each player is counted as a unique opponent, if you beat the same player twice, that will still only count as 1 unique defeat. So with the Standard Medal in order to gain the Bronze Medal you need to defeat 20 unique opponents or 20 different players.

Do you have to eliminate them from the game to count them as defeated or opponents, or by winning a game does that mean that you have now defeated every opponent in that game?

no you don't. just win the game.

With the exception of terminator games, where (I believe) you have to eliminate the opponent and win the overall game.

So to win the standard medal, you'd have to win 20 games that had no redundant players... thats what unique opponent means?

So if you played 20 games with the same person and won them all, that would still only count as 1 unique defeat. You need to defeat 20 different players to earn the medal. If you played a 8 player game and won, that would count as 7 unique defeats as you beat 7 unique opponents, unless you had beaten them before. I hope that makes sense.

Regardless of the game type, if you are alive at the end of the game, you get all the unique defeats for all your opponents. It doesn't matter how they die.

A unique defeat is just like it sounds, a defeat that is not a duplicate of another defeat, i.e. someone you already beat.

Just to further clarify 72o's point above, you don't need to make the kills in Terminator, just be the last man alive. Additionally, you do not get credited for kills you make if you do win the entire game.

Again, since everyone keeps making this harder than it is:

In Terminator, if you are alive at the end, you get ALL the unique defeats. It doesn't matter if you never kill any of them, i.e. they kill each other, deadbeat, neutrals kill them, nukes, whatever.
