It can (generally speaking, there are definitely limitations) be freely flown in the US, however it is also an emblem that incites a tremendous amount of hatred. Sadly, the Confederate flag is frequently used by racists, just as the Nazi swastika is.

You can probably get away with it for the use of representing the confederacy no problem...

I dont believe that is an accurate comparsion

It seems kinda silly that you wouldn't be able to use the battle flag for an attempt at historical accuracy; those who take issue with flying it are more worried about the intent of those flying it than the actual design of the flag.

As a sort of compromise, you could use the first national flag, rather than the battle standard. You're trading some recognizability, but you retain a good bit of historical accuracy at least.

I was only comparing the Confederate flag to the Nazi swastika in that both are frequently used by racists, which they are. I believe that IS an accurate comparison.

Do I believe the two symbols are equal in "badness"? Of course not...nor did I mean to imply that they were. Nor did I mean to imply that it shouldn't be used here at CC...I was simply attempting to explain why it MAY not be allowed.

There's a partially covered flag in the background of the American Civil War map. The intent of the flag would be to portray an historical event and not a racist point of view, so it should be allowed on CC.

I know that, but Battle flag its most famous.
The Confederate Flag

The "Confederate Flag", a 20th century combination of the Battle Flag's colors with the Second Navy Jack's design. Actual historical flags of the CSA have become more obscure. What is now often called "The Confederate Flag" or "The Confederate Battle Flag" (actually a combination of the battle flag's colors with the second naval jack design), despite its never having historically represented the CSA as a nation, has become a widely recognized symbol of the South. It is also called the "rebel", "Southern Cross, or "Dixie" flag, and is often incorrectly referred to as the "Stars and Bars" (the actual "Stars and Bars" is the First National Flag, which used an entirely different design).

During the first half of the 20th century the Confederate flag enjoyed renewed popularity. During World War II some U.S. military units with Southern nicknames, or made up largely of Southerners, made the flag their unofficial emblem. The USS Columbia (CL-56) flew a Confederate Navy Ensign as a battle flag throughout combat in the South Pacific in World War II. This was done in honor of the ship's namesake, the capital city of South Carolina, the first state to secede from the Union. Some soldiers carried Confederate flags into battle. After the Battle of Okinawa a Confederate flag was raised over Shuri Castle by a Marine from the self-styled "Rebel Company" (Company A of the 1st Battalion, 5th Marines). It was visible for miles and was taken down after three days on the orders of General Simon B. Buckner, Jr. (son of Confederate General Simon Buckner), who stated that it was inappropriate as "Americans from all over are involved in this battle". It was replaced with the flag of the United States.[15] By the end of World War II, the use of the Confederate flag in the military was rare
from wikipedia.
This is amazing,,no restriction to use flags in US military during WWII

If its a map making based inquiry , why ask?
The nazi swastika appears in WWII Ardennes, so I think used in a historical context its
appropriate.

When i create this Historical maps,i never get any warning that swastika its forbiden to use for historical maps. Now i just notice that famous board game Axis &Alies in hes cover box have German Flag with swastica, and this play kids, and its not forbiden!?!?!?!? Its this mean that for comercial use its alove to use swastika?!?!?! I create historical maps, and mine view on swastica its only historical object on map,i dont glorify Nazy Germany. Im from Country where Germans with Colaborators, kill 1000000 mine people, but if you want to show some thing like they are, then you need to lift restriction,if purpose appropriate.

Because I wanted to know (and it was obviously a good question, since his response was in the negative).

Agatha Chritie's And then there were none was first published as "Ten Little Niggers" in the UK, and I believe as "Ten Little Indians" in the US. The reference is to the nursery rhyme (in all three cases), which I now believe is called "Ten Little Soldiers". The title doesn't refer to the characters, except that they are killed off in a manner reminiscent of the rhyme, one at a time. The title was changed to reflect changes in attitudes and language. Probably not a bad thing, though in the case of the Conrad I think the question is more difficult.

I should read that one again. I read it in high school (for fun, not for class). Great novel.

I wasn't talking to you, Woodruff. I was asking "Why Ask" because of the prior use of the Nazi flag, thus the assumption that the Rebel one should be acceptable if That one is....

Sorry I wasn't clearythe first time.

Very interesting.
I've never read this book by Conrad - though I have an MA in English.
can't read everything.
Nonetheless. I just can't agree with historical revisionism. It reminds me of that group that wanted to eliminate smoking in movies. All movies. Old movies.
Just doesn't sit right.
People can handle it.

"It belongs in our history, it is part of our history," he said. "But it should be dead and gone."
This what he say,its interesting, but other i dont understand-Dead and Gone. Its he think that we dont need to learn history,or what?
Any things who is historical appropriate its ok,for me.
If you want to learn something you need to know all facts.
